I am having some problems with AcrserveIT 6.61 build 834sp2. I have 3 servers, 1 has the ArcserveIT installed on it and I have 2 more that I reach out to back up. These machines have been backing up and doing fine for about a year and then we started getting performance issues with one mahine. I did the database utilities and did a quick backup of some files on the c drive of the remote machine and it was 150 mb/min. I then tried to do all of the c drive and the registry and it was slow again. I did not know about the database utilities, so that had not been ran at all. I have checked the network and I can copy files form server to server and there is no issues and the speeds are great. I also checked to see that I did not have any mix matched speeds on the server and the 3com switch it is pluged into. It does not matter if I go through the client or direstly to the machine. Any help will be great.

Dan,
It's very common for windows system drives to fill up with many very small files ie. shortcuts, desktop items, profiles, etc.
Backup throughput is often severely reduced when backing up many small files. It is possible that your server c drive drive has filled up with many users profiles, internet shortcuts, etc. Perform a count of files on the c drive. If more than 25k-40k, this may be your problem.

The network may be causing your issue as well. Check switches and NICs for properly matched duplex settings (I never trust the Auto setting). Check for router hops. Check for excessive broadcast traffic (turn off Arcserve discovery service to eliminate some broadcasts and improve performance).

Hope this helps.

Thanks for your help. I checked all of the things that you listed above. I initialized the databases and reinstalled the NT client agent. After looking at this for awhile this is the same machine that runs exchange on the cluster and it backs up fine. I can even back up brick level and no problems. It just takes awhile because of the size.

I still have not figured this one out so any more suggestions will be great.
