Not if you are using a single tape drive. If you are using a library or changer, then you can load up the device with the tapes you want to format and use the chgtest command-
e.g
chgtest changer:[changer id] erase/format startslot:[startslot no] endslot:[endslot no]

chgtest is for a library, tapetest for a stand alone drive.
