We have ARCServe 2000 operating on a Dell Poweredge 2400 Server with Windows 2000 operating system. The backup will be made to a DLT Drive. The server is in a different office to us and we are trying to operate the backup remotely using a dial-in link. The problem we have got is as follows:

When we set up the server, we tested ARCServe and it worked fine. However, when we tried to set up a scheduled job over the dial-in link we have a problem in that the job will not start. It sets up fine, shows in the scheduled jobs list and no errors are reported. We have tried an ad-hoc backup as well and this behaves in exactly the same way.

Any suggestions would be gratefully accepted!!!

Make sure you apply the service pack2 for Arcserve 2000.

Otherwise, check to make sure the device group is ready and available.

Hi KMT,

Your problem is a simple one that I can answer. you are running Windows 2000 and dialing in so I assume you are using Terminal Services. Arcserve 2000 has known problems with Terminal Services and what you are trying to accomplish.

What you need to do is create and schedule your job as you normally do through the terminal services session. Then, exit out of the Arcserve Manager. Go into the Arcserve Administrator and STOP / RESTART to JOB ENGINE ONLY. This will make the required submitted changes and your job should start at that point.

Note - sometimes the job engine will start and then stop again so you may have to restart it more than once. Once the engine is running for at least 2 minutes it's safe. Also, don't have your Arcserve Manager open while you are stopping / restarting the Job Engine as it will not restart most of the time. This is why we use the Administrator to perform this task.

Let me know how you make out.

Electro,

Problem solved!!! Your suggested solution worked a treat!!!

Many thanks for your assistance.

No Problem and glad I could be of assistance :)

One other interesting thing you may have noticed. When you double click on an active job to display the current details (File estimate / etc) that it is blank. This is also a result of my previous message.

You can also get around both of your issues by installing the Arcserve Manager and Administrator to the local machine. Once you have dialed into the server and connected, don't run the terminal server session but just connect remotely with the Arcserve manager. It will be a little slow but once up you will have access to your jobs screen. You should be able to do everything from that normally without the errors you have been receiving. You will also notice the file estimates will now be displayed on the active jobs :)

Thanks Again!
