I'm running Arcserve 2000 SP4 on Windows 2000 SP2. Backups seems to work fine. Restores seem to work if the file is located at the start of the session. If the file you want to restore is located towards the back of the session the restore will stay in the skip stage for over an hour then fail. I have tried everything I can think of. HAs anyone have any idea's?

by everything do you mean the post sp4 patches? It seems like there was 1 for a problem very similar to this.

Are you trying to restore from a spanned-tape set? Is the file located on Seq 2 or higher? Are you seeing any error messages in the activity log?

Enable debugging on the Job and Tape engines, and try the restore again. That may provide additional information.

As per jabus' response we have had similar issues and we just put the next tape or tapes that fall in that seq as a precaution.

Thanks for your fast replies.

To answer your questions, I've just got SP4 installed with no post updates. I've since had a look at the post updates and I can't see an update that will fix this problem. If you know which one you think might fix it could you let me know.

What I've done is broken up the backup into small sessions to see if i can restore from any part of the session and it works fine. It's when you restore from a large session that when it fails. The backup is spanned over three tapes.

What error message(s) are you getting in the activity log? Did you try enabling tape logging?

After waiting for over an hour I get the following 6 error messages in the activity log. Then it fails.......

1. TAPE E6300 Windows NT SCSI PORT ERROR[ABSL:3050 CMD:11h] SCSI Command Retry

2. TAPE E6300 Windows NT SCSI PORT ERROR[ABSL:3050 CMD:11h] SCSI Command Retry

3. TAPE E6300 Windows NT SCSI PORT ERROR[ABSL:3050 CMD:11h] SCSI Command Retry

4. TAPE E6300 Windows NT SCSI PORT ERROR[ABSL:3050 CMD:11h NT:48Fh 1167]

5. E3717 Unable to go to cluster. (Cluster=4747282, hardware error)

6. E8522 Failed to recieve data from the client agent (EC10060)

I have changed the SCSI card and Tape unit still the same.

Any ideas???????

Have you tried changing the SCSI cable? Have you been getting this error all along? Were the backups made on the same equipment? Have any firmware changes been made?

Is it a single session that spans 3 tapes (tape 2 in the database does not show any sessions)?

there are about 10 sessions on the tape which span over 3 tapes. I've changed the scsi card, cable and Tape drive. The only thing I haven't changed was the Library controller card in the compaq library which I ring to see if I can get Compaq out here today to change. I don't know when the last firmware upgrade was. Also we have another site with the same hardware and we have no problems.

What kind of library is it? Is all of the equipment on CA's HCL?

If you stil have the tape library manuals (or locate the PDF's), then you may be able to determine what the error message is that the library is passing back from the information in #4.

The tape library is a Compaq MSL5026. I've also enabled RSM.

What is teh firmware of the tapeunits? I've had same kind of problems, and after applying the latest firmware to my Compaq SDLT Units (v46 2E2E) it looks like it's solved (See also 'E63000 & E3717 Errors with SDLTs').

Grz,

Mario

Firmware version of the tape unit is 2D2D. Are you able to flash the tape drive by diskette or do you need to do it with a cable like when flashing the library?

I flashed the tape driver by using TSMC (Tape Storage Management Console, from HP). Using this tool you can flash the tape units 'on the fly' from within Windows. CA told us to go to firmware 2E2E, cause this would solve our problems. Normally we would flash by using a floppy disk, but the latest firmware image couldn't be found on the Compaq site. After calling Compaq, they told us we ad to use TSMC (Free download on their site). Don't know how it works with tape libraries.

if you need more help, let me know.
Grz,

Mario

Thanks for everyones help.

I have flashed the Tape drive to 2E2E through the TSMC software. I've also flashed the Library via a serial cable that you get with the unit. This has seemed to fix my problem. I've been testing it for the last week and all seems well.

Thanks a lot!

Hi,

I have run into the exact problem with my Quantum SuperLoader. I just checked the firmware of the drive is v42. Can anyone know how to fix this problem? I have tried all the solutions above, enable RSM, update firmware...etc. My tape also has a lot of sessions.

Thanks,

Sebastian

I did apply QO29368 and tested it this morning and it was still not restoring the file.

Any other ideas or anyone has the same problem with Quantum Superloader?

I have copied the log from ArcServe:
