Arcserve 2000 over SCSI. Fast backup, slow restore.

We have a Compaq Proliant ML370 (running Win2K SP2) attached to an LTO Overland Ultrium LoaderExpress (internal drive is a Seagate Viper) by LVD SCSI. We are using Arcserve 2000 SP3. Backup goes at nearly 400MB/min, but restores only do <10MB/min. There is plenty of info on fixing slow performance, especially over networks, but this is only slow in one direction. Any ideas?

...this problem is stranger than I thought:
Restores start fast, but then the speed falls away over half an hour or so, and eventually the SCSI bus times out or I get fed up waiting.
Seagate say Overland should support us, but to try a non-Compaq SCSI controller. Maybe it will help.
