Hi all,

I'm currently using arcserve 2000 SP4 + Exchange agent with the brick level patch to back up my win2k sp3/exchange 2000 machine. It all runs fine and dandy till it gets to the mail store. It backs up the os/system state, etc perfectly but when it gets through about 5 mailboxes it then stops backing up. When I check it the next day I find the job is still active within the arcserve console, yet nothing is actually happening. There is nothing within the log files either to say anything is wrong.

The agent is configured to the letter, with associated rights etc, but it doesn't want to play ball.

Any clues?

Cheers,

Kemps.

Hi,

Does it always fail on the same mailbox?
Do you have virus scanning enabled on the exchange server?

If it is the same mailbox, I'd look at possible corruption or virus infected emails within the mailbox causing the backup to stall.

No it's on different mailboxes each time, but roughly between the first and the 5th. I have virus scanning enabled on the server as well (trend officescan).

i don't know exactly, but look at this.

PRODUCT: ARCserve AE/WG Edition RELEASE: 7.0

Backup jobs may hang when the entire local node is selected for backup.

I've already tried that one as well, and still no joy. There's absolutely no mention of any failures in the activity log, or any clue as to what may be causing it. I'm really starting to think about getting Backup Exec. This is starting to get a bit stressing.

kemps, i think i had similar problem.
what you are describing looks like QO23827
why don't you do this:
1. backup ARCserve 2000 DB to tape or else
uninstall arcserve and all agents
(reboot the system just to be sure that everything is uninstalled)
2. install arcserve 2000
3. install exchange agent and other options that you may have
4. apply SP3 (needed for exchange 2000 compatibility)
5. apply SP4
6. apply the patches [preferably in this order]:
(this is what i have on my system)
QO22840 - exch update
QO39924 - tape eng. update
QO20824 - stop active job
QO23827 - local job hang
QO29368 - cannot find tape
7. restore arcserve DB
8. run the job and test if it works.
done.

i don't know what to tell you more than that. just clean up you system, reboot after you install something and reboot after you uninstall. microsoft likes it.

if this doesnt work, try a test machine and possibly rebuild the system.
good luck.

Create a new backup job and configure it to do a brick level backup of your exchange only. Do not schedule any other directories to be backup up in the new job. Or, source priority on the existing job so that the brick level backup is the first job to be executed.
