Hello,

When I'm configuring the exchange 2000 agent for Exchange 2000 server, the agent interface returns a "System Privilege" error.

Failed to add SYSTEM privilege to the specified account
Error Code=%d
Error Code=1314

My build number is 394 and I've applied the Exchange Agent patch.

Can someone help me with this?

Hello,

I think that you have not assign the appropriate privillages to your system account. You have to give the following permissions to your account i.e. from which you are installing Backup Agent.

1. It should be a member of Administrative Group.
2. It should be act as a part of Operating System.
3. It should be log on as Service.
4. It should be log on locally.

And if you are installing on a Member Server then you have to give same permissions to your local account also.

Pritash

On the Exchange 2000 backup agent CD there is a manual that is pretty good at step by step instructions on how to Configure the Backup agent. See Chapter 2 to Configure the Backup Agent.

Make sure that your backup agent service account has Domain Admins set as the Primary Group.

Make sure the Local Domain Name is correct. If you have multiple domains, are you selecting the correct one?

Make sure you created a Mailbox in Exchange for the backup agent service account.

Some nice fellow on the microsoft newsgroups gave me these instructions:

On the bottom of this reply you will find my comments on this story.

These are the steps you need to follow:

Setup Arcserve Backup Account
Install Arcserve Service Pack 2 (SP2)
Install from Arcserve 2000 CD2
NOTE: This is the same patch as LO85115.exe as listed on
website
Install Exchange Agent from CD2
Below is how to setup the backup account and ensure it's
working.
Creating the Backup Agent Service Account and Mailbox on
Windows 2000

To create the Backup Agent Service Account and Mailbox:

1. Open the Administrative Tools program group and
select Active Directory
Users and Computers on the domain controller.
2. Expand the tree from the console and click Users.
2. Click Action, and then click New and User.
3. Enter a username and password. For this document, the
sample username DBAGENT is used.
4. Select the option: Password never expires.
5. Click Next.
6. Check Create an Exhange mailbox. Select the desired
storage group and
database on the local server.

Enter a unique alias name for the mailbox.
The alias name must not be a prefix of any other mailbox.
Click Next.

7. Click Finish.
8. In the Active Directory Users and Computers, Click User account,
action, and then Properties.
9. Click Members Of tab to ensure the user is a member
of Administrators, Domain users and Backup Operators groups.
10. Click OK to exit.

Assigning Permissions for the Service Account

To assign the appropriate permissions for the service account:

1. Open the Exchange System Manager. Right-click the organization name
and select Delegate Control.
The Exchange Administration Delegation Wizard appears:
2. Add the service account with the Exchange administrator role to
users and groups.
3. Click Next, then Finish.

Configuring the Backup Agent

To configure the Backup Agent to back up individual
mailboxes and folders:

1. Log on to the Windows 2000 server on which Microsoft exchange Server
is installed.
Make sure that the Exchange database containing the service account
mailbox is mounted.
2. Run Microsoft Exchange Backup Agent Configuration from the Program
menu. This configuration dialog will also appear during
installation. All of the steps for this guide can be done at that
time as well.
3. Enter the information for the mailbox. At this time you can also
specify whether you want the exchange agent to communicate with
remote ARCserve servers through either the Named Pipes or TCP/IP
protocols. (TCP/IP is only used on database level backups, not on
mailbox or folder level backups).
4. Click Next.

If your Backup Agent Service Account is not configured correctly, a message box is displayed:
If your Backup Agent Service Account is not configured correctly, the setup program will allow you to use only the database backup portion of the Backup Agent; you will not be able to perform mailbox level backups.
If you have correctly configured your account, the entire Backup Agent will be configured.

5. Click OK to complete the configuration.

Hope all that helps,

My comments

Nop, I think I'll just have to give it up and wait for
arcserve to create a good config whitepaper.
This is what I did;

1) Simulated the customers production environment (twice,
both clean installs)
2) Followed up al you're steps.
3) Given the arcexdba account "log on locally", "act a
part the..." and "log on as a service" rights
4) Made Domain Admins primary group.
5) Added registry keys to make "security tab" visible in
exchange and gave the service account necessary
permissions.
6) Finally after no success, I tried the new service pack
(Arc sp3)

After installing the service pack the explanation line of
the Error Code changed.
It now says; failed to get information of specified
account (EC 1314).

It looks like the configuration part of the agent tries
to query Active Dir via LDAP but can't resolve my service
account. Wrong use of rfc standards, I really dont know???

More help needed!!!

Thx Frank

I had the same exact problem, but a after a lot of internet search and playing around with the exchange server, I've found the solution.
First you need to check this useful web site.

I've installed ARCserve in two machines, one of them is a domain controller, the other is a member server. the Exchange agent in the Domain controller worked perfect, but I had problems that you mentioned with the server. So I figured since domain controllers have the users credential data stored within them. Servers have to get those credentials from domain controllers, that's why, I guess, you're getting that error. You have to create an account in the local server with same permissions and password in order to work. after that you have to logon with that account locally and try to run the agent configuration again. I've tried that and it worked fine.

give it a try!! :)

Maybe I miss the point.
When you install Exchange 2000, microsoft gives you no opportunity to do that without AD (in a front-end server configuration)So the possibility to make a local user account is disabled.
Only in a situation where the Exchange database is on a member server I can imagine the situation you've sketched in your solution. But what's the case with ArcServe...It's designed for medium and small business. So I think there are a lot of companies where the have to do it with just one exchange server on which the have to store all exchange related components.
But Case tnx for the tip, I will give it a try in our "lab". It's worth to give it a try.

Still looking for the solution......

Check out the forum: Arcserve 2000 Exhange backup agent

User "aamchimumbai (IS/IT--Manageme) Jul 11, 2002" has written a complete procedure to resolve this problem.
Here it is again:

I got it sorted out ..Thanx everybody for their ansewers.

1. Create a domain account for the user to be used while configuring the agent.
2. Give it Administrators, Domain Admin, Backup Operators rights. Remove Domain Users from the group list. Make Domain Admin the Primary group of the user.
3. In Domain Controller Security Policy, Under Security Settings->Local Policies->User Rights Assignment; assign Act as part of operating system, Logon on as a service & Logon on locally rights to the user.
4. In Domain Security Policy, Under Security Settings->Local Policies->User Rights Assignment; assign Act as part of operating system & Logon on as a service rights to the user.
5. In Local Security Policy, Under Security Settings->Local Policies->User Rights Assignment; assign Act as part of operating system, Logon on as a service & Logon on locally rights to the user.
6. If it’s a Member Server add the domain user to Administrators, Power Users and Backup Operators groups.
7. If it’s a Member Server create a user with the same user name and password as the domain user on the local machine and assign it to Administrators, Power Users and Backup Operators groups.
8. On the Exchange server go to System Manager, right click on the Organisation icon and select Delegate Control and add the Domain User and assign Exchange Full Administrator rights to it.
9. Install the agent and give all the valid inputs in the boxes, Exchange should authenticate the user.
10. Start Arcserve Backup and take Brick Level Backups of the Exchange Server.
