We are doing a network restore to another server via the Arcserve Agent v12. It is slower than doing a network backup using Arcserve 12 without an agent. We have set the restore priority on the agent to the highest setting but it still does not give more throughput.

Example:

With Agent=1,900 mb/m
Without Agent= 3,800 mb/m

The only reason we dont do it without the agent on large restores is because it sometimes does not restore some files and we have to restore those files again once its complete. The Agent is more conistent with restores. Is this why it way slower?

Restores will always be the slowest as the server has to create the directory, files and securities for each file as it is being written. Backup is a READ process and servers due multiple reads well, but this is a write operation, the agent a very little control or help here.

I understand restores are slower but why is it slower with an agent?

good point, it should not be. After all with the Agent the processing is taking place local instead of over the net.

so why would it be slower. I think all the permissions and that type of stuff is restored either way, except for System State I think that can only happen with the agent. but you are giving a mb/m so I'm guessing the time needed to restore the System State is not part of your equation.

Well perhaps there is some interaction with something else with the agent. In the agent configuration you can set the priority, try setting it high, and if that does not help try setting it low.

Of course there is the old standard of disabling the virus protection software. No sense in having it scan all the files as they are being restored.
