Hi,

I've recently installed Arcserve 11.5 SP3 (upgrade from 9) but I've been having major problems getting it to do an incremental backup of Linux Servers. I run Full's at the weekends and then incrementals during the week but no matter what I try all the files get backed up every night. I'm having the same problem across all Linux servers which are mostly RHEL 4.

I'm using the Linux Agent on all of them so I don't think its anything to do with Samba.

Is your ARCserve Server running on Windows?

If so, then you're seeing a limitation of the ARCServe for Windows software: It cannot do incremental or differential backups of Unix / Linux servers!

Yep, its running on Windows...strange how thats not very obvious from the documentation!

ARCserve uses the archive bit to decide whether to backup a file or not during incremental backups. As linux and UNIX filesystems do not use archive bits ARCserve cannot handle Incrementals or differentials on these systems.
There is a workaround however if you schedule a full backup once a week and schedule another backup to run on weekdays using a filter for files modified in the last 1 or 2 days. This way you can simulate more or less an incremental backup schedule.

regards
