Hello,

We have a user who called me up to her office to tell me all of her archives were missing. When I looked at her folder name is had (archive)(archive)(archive)(archive)(archive) after her user name. Clicking on All Documents reveals only one archived entry, but if you look at the .nsf in her Archive folder, it shows a file that is 56mb in size. Talking to my Notes Support team revealed very little as they insisted that in order to have all those (archive)'s she would have had to have several layers of folders (ie: lotus\notes\data\archive\archive\archive\archive\archive)
but she only had the one archive folder. They had me rename the folder in the database properties, which of course only "corrected" the multiple (archive) name issue but did not resolve recovering all her archived entries.

Is it possible to recover the entries for this database? I have tried to use CTRL+click the archive folder in Notes(r5.0.5) and looking at $FolderRef, but that is blank as well. There must be some way of recovering this file since it is 56mb in size, there is obviously something in it and not just 56mb of blanks. Perhaps there is a program out there that we can use to open this database outside notes? Help if possible.

Is the user on a server copy of the archive or local copy? I would check the % used to make sure the DB is fully utilized. If she has a local archive, the archive would not get compacted. Just a thought...

If you still have the archive NSF file this should work.
Create a new archive, but when asked for a name use the name of the old/original archive nsf file.
Once that's done, copy the old/original archive nsf file into the directory of the new archive you just created (this overwrites the new archive nsf file but that won't matter.)

You can try this yourself. Get the location of your achive file. Copy the archive into a different directory. Go into your achive location settings and change them to the new directory (which has a copy of your archive file in it.) You should find that you can open your archives from this other location.

The idea is that Notes recognizes the archive name and location but doesn't know anything else.

Thank you for replying, shelbyville. I tried what you suggested, but it still shows nothing in her archives. It was worth a shot, but I think this user will have to live with the fact that she hosed her archive.

What is the percent used on the DB? Right-click the archive DB icon from the Desktop, Properties, Information Tab "I", % used.

If it's not above 99%, try compacting it. That will reflect a more accurate size as to what the DB contains.

Hi,

Try to open the database in Designer. Create a view without any selection formula.

If you see the documents now in that view, you can copy and paste them into a new database.

You can also try to replace the design of the archive and then take a look at the "All documents" view. Press CTRL+SHIFT+F9 to rebuild all views or SHIFT+F9 to rebuild just one.

If the usage of the database is only 10% or so, then all documents have been deleted, but the database has not yet been compacted.

Kind regards,
