Applying non-current PTFs

I am preparing to upgrade a V4R3 os to V4R5. I want to set all temporarily applied PTFs to permanently apply at the next unattended IPL. In looking through the PTFs that are currently applied temporarily, I saw many that were for previous releases, going back to V3R2. Will those PTFs apply properly since our os version is newer, or will this cause all sorts of problems? What should I do?

Did you get an instruction manual with the OS version ?

I actually printed out the installation instructions from the internet. They don't specifically address that issue. I went ahead and permanently applied all PTFs last week. It seemed to go fine and we have had no problems to date. Thanks.

I think that PTFs are cumulative in nature. So if a fix for V3Rx is on there all through your upgrade, it was not superseded by any other PTF or cum package.

I'm about to upgrade to V5R1M0 come Monday. IBM sure makes a lot of documentation, eh? J.R. Juiliano

I'd like to be going to V5Ranything, but I can't get there from here. I have to go to V4R5 first. I think we'll upgrade again within the next 6 months, then I'll be trudging down IBM's paper trail yet again. *sigh* Good luck with your own upgrade and thanks for the input.

I just checked your first message and you state V4R3. Is that right?

Because, if you are on V4R4[/], then you should be able to upgrade directly...

I'm not a wizard on this OS/400 stuff, but reading from here:

Just make sure that you don't have SPD bus structure in your AS/400 because it is not supported in V5 unless you have an external cabinet !

Yep, you read it correctly, J.R. We are on V4R3 and so must first upgrade to V4R5. I just started working here a couple of months ago and one of the first things I noticed was the upgrade package that had been sitting around since September of 2000. And we are still on Client Access for Windows 95/NT.

As for the SPD bus issue, we have a model 170 so I think we're okay on that. Somebody please correct me if I am mistaken.

Right now I'm just trying to get the company up to snuff as much as possible. I'd like to get two more years out of this box if I can; at least until we can budget for a new one. Thanks for all the info.

Right there with ya! We had V4R4 sitting around for more than a year, with V4R3 in the system. Then I came in with ZERO knowledge of AS/400's. Luckily we hired someone to do the installation after they did some hardware upgrades.

We have a little less than 40 people running on a 170, and even though it's rock solid, we're starting to see some serious performance drag.

Our company had an opportunity to get an 820 system as part of the Greenstreak promotion, but it was still too costly at the time. Even though things were 50% off, it couldn't be justified...

Hopefully you are on or going to Ethernet connections. Using CA Express has been really beneficial. The old CA package was very effective but a little slow for us.

I learn more every day. Pretty soon the old stuff is going to start leaking out of my head, because it's full...

I too looked into the Greenstreak offer, but since I was new to the organization I wasn't sure what the company's needs were going to be over the next few years. It wasn't the time to put forth that type of proposal. I did mention it to my boss just so that he was aware of the promotion, but we both agreed that it would be better to upgrade our existing box instead.

We are on TCP/IP so after the operating system upgrade, I will be rolling out CAE to the workstations.

I hate playing catch-up, but I guess that's just one of the things that keep us all employed. ;-)
