when trying to install some programs in windowsxp they freeze around 3/4 the way through and i have to do ctrl-alt-delete and shut it down. Some programs so far are Paint Shop Pro 7 trial and Ulead dvd movie factory trial,
ms intellimouse software froze but the next time i started winxp there it was installed.....weird! any ideas?

specs are:
nvidia geforce 2 gts
thunderbird 1000 cpu
gigabyte 5aa motherboard
soundblaster live value
512 mb ram

With the programs that don't install, is there anything else such as virus programs running in the background when you try to install?

Do you comply with the new programs installation instructions?

i dont have any tsr virus programs etc, and it is only some programs, all my games have installed from cd fine, these are programs on the hard drive, so dont know if that makes any differnce.....

The more information that is posted about your hardware, and software, the easier it is too look at the problem.

> You just mentioned in your second post that the programs that you have had lockup and not fully install where on your hard drive. So, I am assuming that these are files that you downloaded of the Internet, and are EXE files.
Is that correct ?

> If that isn't correct, can you post more information about these files, and how they came to be on your HD ?

> By using CNTRL-ALT-DEL in XP you bring up a menu, and you can see Processes running,
and also APPLICATIONS......... do you check to make sure that nothing is running before you start the install?

What about Processes ? Too many ? Unnecessary programs running that you could shut down ?

The only other thing I can think of is that the half installing programs have left bits and pieces all over the place making any attempt to install impossible.

Perhaps you should look at clearing out your Temp folders and use a free utility like RegCleaner (download from ) and clean out from the Registry the remains of failed installations. I have been using RegCleaner for a couple of years and it is a safe and reliable program. It will backup any parts of the Registry it suggests you delete. You may have to manually clear out folders installed by the offending programs.

If the original downloads have become corrupted you may need to re-download those also.
