Hello all,

I am doing an Application Server Upgrade From R10.1 to R11.1

I have spun up another Application Server and backed up the primary to it.

Documentation indicates updating from R10.1 to R11.0.4.5

The documentation indicates to preform this update "using the standard ISO transfer methods" - Its been awhile since I have done one so I forgot the "Standard ISO transfer methods".

Just want to confirm this is the correct spot to do so:

derfloh: Can I do a Fresh install of R11.1 and restore from a Application Server Backup from R10.1 ?

Or should I go to R11.0 doing the upgrade process, do a application server backup and then do a fresh install of R11.1 and restore from the R11.0 Backup?

Another option may be to have them spin up two more Virtual Machines. One, to load the new R11.1 Application Server, and one for the backup server.

So they will have 3 Virtual Machines:

- Existing Application Server on R10.1 (Keeping for emergency until new R11.1 Server Functionality confirmed)
- New Application Server on R11.1 (Fresh Install)
- Backup Application Server on R11.1: Backup from Existing Application Server on R10.1, Restore to New Application Server on R11.1 (Fresh Install)

You may need to rehost the licenses if you go the route of spinning up a new machine. Isn't big deal but something to keep in mind.

NYSTECH: Thanks for the information, they have an IPO that has all the licenses on the appliance - what would this have to do with the VM Pro application server and licenses?

I have been testing in my Lab and have run into a few issues with the Fresh Install Method:

I have 3 Virtual Machines Fired up:

- Backup Application Server: R11.1
- Current Application Server Version: R10.1
- Fresh Install Application Server R11.1

I have done backups from the Current Application Server Version: R10.1 to the Backup Application Server: R11.1, and they can be seen on R10.1 when I attempt to do a restore.

However, on the R11.1 machine, none of the backups are being pulled - what gives?

I can successfully do a backup from the R11.1 server to the backup server:

And I can see the Restore Option on the R11.1 Server, however no backups shown that I did from the R10.1 Server:

You can do an in place upgrade for virtual machines by booting off an upgrade disk. This then runs an upgrade script that backs up the existing server, upgrades it and restores the backup. Once completed you remove the backup disk and you are good to go. No need for additional servers, you just download the upgrade disk, add it to the virtual machine and set it to be the boot drive.

Check the section related to the type of virtual host you have and folow the guide, I have done this several times and it works.

Question on the backup application server:

I now see: "Backup/restore is not supported between different server software release levels."

So my question is, I am backing up R10.1 before doing the upgrade to R11.1

Since I will be on R11.1, can my backup server also be on R11.1 even though I am backing up R10.1 to move to R11.1

Thank you

In the Avaya doc's I linked to, the backup refered to is there in case you need to restore the server due to a failure in the upgrade process it's not part of the actual process. You add the upgrade disk to the Virtual Host and boot from that, the script uses the upgrade disk as the destination for the backup/restore used in the upgrade process.

10.1 backup is there in case you need to roll back to 10.1 as is the 11.0.4 backup.

Ekster: Yes, I understand that.

Let me re-phrase my question.

They are on R10.1

I am upgrading to R11.1

I would like to backup the R10.1 to another Application Server.

I would like the backup application server to be on R11.1 (as that is what they will be on, and I plan to keep the server to automate backups to it)

So, my question was, does it make a difference if I backup their existing R10.1 on the R11.1 Backup application server? Or do I need to backup their Existing R10.1 to a Backup Application Server also running R10.1?

My thoughts on this are to always keep any parts of the system at the same version.

Ii would follow this path to upgrade to 11.1:

install backup server at 10.1 and backup main server.

upgade main server using ISO to 11.0.4. If everything is OK then upgrade backup server to 11.0.4 using ISO and backup the main server again.

Upgrade main server to 11.1 using the method in link from my earlier post. If everything is OK then upgrade backup server to 11.1 as well and then finally backup the main server.

At any phase of the upgrade you can roll back the main server and restore the correct backup.

Some more questions on the upgrade. The R10.1 is installed as a Virtual machine using the .ova install

When I go to upgrade it is asking for an .iso file. Can I upgrade using this .iso file to R11.0.4.5?

That's correct:

In WebManager Solution View, from the "Actions" drop down box transfer the ISO then when it has completed the transfer select upgrade:

It's the 11.0.4 to 11.1 that needs to be done using upgrade disk (OVA)

Probably a dumb question, so I apologize in advance, however I did the upgrade to R11.0.4.5 and did a backup to my application server. Why is it showing the "Version" as 11.0.5.1 ?

Also, why are some apps showing "up to date" still on R10?

Question on the upgrade process to R11.1

I am using VMware Workstation Pro in my lab to test this upgrade first.

I am confused on this part of the process. How can I access the "Datastore" to upload the .vmdk file?

The datastore is where the VMWare host stores the virtual machine's disks. It will be the place you put the original disk when you created the servers

I can't help you with the location in the Workstation version, I've only ever done this on full VMware servers.

Effectively, what you are doing is adding another disk (the upgrade VMDK disk) then changing the boot order of the IPO server to boot off that disk instead of the original one. Once the upgrade is completed, you change the boot order back to the original disk and remove the upgrade disk.
