We have one Windows XP Pro workstation where a specific application launches slowly when launched from a desktop shortcut; however, application launches quickly from the all programs menu. Does anyone have any ideas as to what might cause something like this?

Have you tried deleting this shortcut and creating a new one?

Does the shortcut work correctly from Safe Mode, or is it a shortcut to a network location?

What is slow, the application opening fully or the shortcut locating the application?

It might be that it has to continually search the Path to find the program components.

Make a .cmd or .bat file that first does a CD into the Program Files folder for the application, and use this as the shortcut target.

After double-clicking the desktop shortcut the application splash screen appears and the program hangs for along period and time. Finally we had to use task manager to cancel the program. It appears that it is the application opening fully that is slow.

Examine the properties of the shortcut that works against the desktop shortcut which doesn't and see if there is any difference especially in the Target application location.

Do you have a half installed version of this application as well as a correctly installed version in different folders?

A full and clean installation of the program was performed. The workstation was recently reimaged with a fresh clean installation of Windows XP Pro. I will make a comparison of the shortcut properties for both the desktop and the all programs menu.
