Has anyone seen anything like this?

I have an end-user who is experiencing application freezes/hangs several times a day. This seems to happen when he opens an e-mail attachment (usually .pdf or Excel doc), and then tries to do a Save As of the file; the application freezes up when in the Save As dialog box, he clicks on the pull down-menu to navigate to a different drive/folder. When the application hangs, it's not possible to End-task it; the following message pops up "This program cannot be closed. If it is being debugged now, please resume it or close the debugger first." The only thing to do at this point is to reboot (which takes forever).

Here are the details on the environment:

* Dell Optiplex GX240, 512 MB RAM, P4 1.8 Mhz
* W2K Pro, SP3; all critical updates have been applied
* IE6SP1
* Main apps: Office XP Standard SP2, Adobe Acrobat Reader 5.1, Bloomberg, Blackberry, AIM, Winzip
* Trend OfficeScan Corp
* There are no viruses, trojans, or spyware on the system to the best of my knowledge; I have also ran thorough hardware diagnostics and everything came up fine.
* System is part of an AD domain; local profile, couple of network drives mapped.
* No one else seems to be having this issue

Any and all suggestion/ideas/brainstorms are welcome. Thanks in advance.

I am having the same exact problem on the same exact Dell system! We have Office 2000, Norton Antivirus Corporate Edition, and all the relevant updates installed. We have other similiarly spec'd Dell systems that this does not happen to--this particular system seems to have had this behavior from the start.

Anybody out there know why this happens?? Thanks-

Have you recently removed a server or network resources that was needed to install any of your softwares on those computers?

I've often had support calls for things like that and it simply turns out that they have/had mapped to a network resource that is now gone. When you try a SAVE AS, Windows pulls downs it's MRU list (Most Recently Used) and tries to access all of them. If the ressource is gone, it seems to hang there for a very long time until it times out. It will do this for every resource that is gone...

Empty your MRU's and make sure you don't have any maps to unknown servers.

2 things spring to mind:

1. Corrupt user profile.

2. Corrupt Outlook profile.

Test #2 by logging in to windows as the user that has the problem. Create an outlook profile for another user (yourself) under that person's login. Have someone send an e-mail with an xls or pdf attachment to you. Open Outlook and login to your account. Try to save the attachment.

Test #1 by logging in to windows as a different user. Configure an Outlook profile then have someone send an e-mail that has problem attachment. See if the attachment can be saved.

Hope this helps.
