As the subject says!

You can get it from the Apple corporate website. It doesn't require a restart if you install just the browser... but then I already had Quicktime etc already installed.

It's a beta at the moment... but hopefully it'll keep the other web browser makers on their toes.

Cheers,
Jeff

Hi

I am sure their beta is more stable than a certain browsers final release. So testing in progress. [thumbsup2] Thanks Jeff.

Feherke.

Thanx Jeff.

At first usage seems a little slow. I'll test it out some more, and post back with any findings.

I do like the interface though.

It's getting a bit of a roasting on some of the news sites... mostly people that don't understand the concept of "beta". Still... I've started using it as my main browser for a while and it seems fine. Try quitting it and starting again... awesome relaunch speeds (in both MacOSX and Windows - something that I always feel is missing with modern apps).

Cheers,
Jeff

I know its a Beta. I'm not thinking it will be perfect. So far the experience has been fine. The slowness has gone away since I restarted the machine.

So far so good. I would like a New Tab button on the toolbar. But the Ctrl+T shortcut works o.k also.

I'm liking it. In fact I'm browsing Tek-tips using it and writing this message. on it. and all is well.

I can say this though: It does have a lot less bugs than Microsoft's IE7 beta release did. Heck even their official final release is nowhere near as good as this Safari Beta.

I had a few annoyances - but on the whole it is a very good beta version:
1) Maximising on the secondary monitor of a dual-monitor setup: Safari disappears from the viewable area and the only way to get it back (AFAIK) is to restart it.

2) "Report Bugs to Apple" Help menu item crashes Safari when submitting a bug report!

I am very impressed by the relaunch speed (as Jeff noted).

Hi

Honestly, it does not match my style. I have 66 extensions installed in my FireFox and caught it once using 350 Mb of memory. I think is not possible to do that in Safari.

As a conclusion, I like it and certainly will use it, just it will not become my default browser.

As an extension of my second point in my previous post:
2) Safari crashes when clicking:
a) either the Submit or Cancel button on the "Report Bugs to Apple" dialog
b) either the Add or Cancel button on the "Add Bookmark" dialog
c) the Done button on the Customize Toolbar dialog

Hi

Interesting. Excepting pressing the Submit button in the Report Bugs to Apple dialog ( which I did not pressed ), the others works flawless for me on Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2.

Strange - I'm using XP Pro SP2 as well!

Do you know if this renders websites the same as it would on a Mac, or is there no point in testing with it if you don't have a Mac.

I don't NEED another browser, my favourite is IE7 64bit , but if it helps me to test for Apple Mac's without the need for having one, then i'll go get it.

But if it works like Netscape for Windows , then there isn't any point.

Advice Please :)

I doubt it will render exactly the same as Safari OSX uses the OSX type rendering engine which is fantastic - really knocks Windows into a cocked hat.

It should give you an idea of layout issues though.

You should still get a Mac though. The only downside is that once you start using it you won't be able to work on your windows machine, it will just feel nasty.

What about getting Mac OS for IBM PC.

I heard that was out, is it?

Can I then dual boot my Core2Duo machine from Mac OS to Windows

No infact triple boot, i'm already dualing Vista & XP!

Well IE7 sure doesn't - lol

It sure doesn't :D - nor does FF, though it's better than IE.

You can only run MacOSX (legally) on Macintosh hardware... so to answer your question... no... you cannot run up MacOSX on an IBM PC.

If you buy a Mac, then you can partition it (without having to restart) and have a dual boot capability. I have XP and MacOSX installed... and it would be a simple task to add Vista as well (now Apple provided Vista compatible drivers for their hardware).

If you are considering a development machine, then you should seriously consider a Mac if you want to leverage hardware that can run either/all OS's.

I would expect that Safari 3 beta on Windows will render elements on the page in the same way that Safari 3 beta on the Mac does. There is no logical reason to expect otherwise. The fonts may look different - but they look the same on the screen "side by side" for me.

I've had a few crashes now using Safari 3 beta on the Mac - nothing reproduceable... but it looks good!

Cheers,
Jeff

Thanks Jeff,

I refuse to get a Mac , sorry! , I have invested heavily into IBM PC components and always build my own PC, if I could get a MacOS to run on it, I'd give it a whirl, but i'm not prepared to spend money on a Mac, just to test if my website renders ok in its browser.

I though that MAc moving to Intel CPU's and ditching RISC (even if RISC is far quicker), was a move to break into the mainstream IBM PC compatible market, obviously this isn't the case.

I'll give Safari a whirl and see how i get on, you guys taught me if it renders ok in Opera you should be OK , though I have had a report that Safari on Mac is not diplaying correctly yet FF on Mac is, which is why I was interested in this.

However it took me 3 weeks and 5 members having Vista problems to convince the Boss I needed Vista if i was to continue to be able to support our members with PC problems.

Getting him to buy me a Mac, I think I got a better chance getting Anglelina Jolie to go to bed with me ;-)

Hi

Now I hit something that broke my enthusiasm. I try to specify Safari to be executed by ConTEXT to show an HTML document and I can not find anything to pass the filename as command line parameter like this :

"\Program Files\Safari\Safari.exe" "[green]filename or path or URL or whatever[/green]"

But Safari always open with the configured Home page. :-( The Safari Help says nothing, usual help parameters ( [tt]--help[/tt], [tt]-h[/tt], [tt]-?[/tt], [tt]/h[/tt], [tt]/?[/tt] ) are not recognized.

I just can not believe this can not be done with Safari.

Feherke.
