app running in background help

i have a app that i want to run as windows starts up, runs in the background, and is not seen by the user (i.e. is not seen in taskbar or system tray). its ok if it shows up in task manager. anyone have a solution for this. i wrote the code in visual c++, now i would like the .exe to run in the background. does visual studio have something that writes to the registry, or some kind of installer to perform this? thanx. wazilian

On NT based OS that is known as a NT Service. There is a utility named "srvany.exe" that will allow you to execute your application as a NT Service.

Alternatively you could develop your application as an NT Service yourself rather than using srvany.exe. There are many articles/samples on

i would like to get this to work on windows 2000 and windows xp. i already have this small c++ program, i just want to incorporate it into windows startup and have it running where the user won't see it. thanks. wazilian

I just read my post. It did not state that Windows 2000 and XP are NT based systems so my orginal post should apply.
