Apache stops serving after 11 - 12 hours.

I have been running Apache successfully on an XP home machine for quite awhile. Then two weeks ago when I installed the latest batch of XP updates (not SP2, I've had that for awhile) and the latest Zone Alarm update, I started having problems with Apache. It will work great for exactly 11 to 12 hours then just stop responding. To get it working again I have to stop then start the service, simply restarting the service doesn't seem to work.

At first I thought it was Zone Alarm because I updated that at the same time, but I have tried going back to the old version and had the same problem. Also, when Apache stops responding I can't get it to respond at the external or internal IP address as well as at localhost. I don't seem to have a problem with any other internet application or server.

I have looked through all the system and Apache logs I could find and didn't see anything that correlates to the time when Apache stops responding.

I'm hoping I'm just missing something obvious and this isn't a problem created by the XP updates. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

salemnl,

Do any useful extries appear in your Apache or Windows XP logs after your server stops responding?

Thanks for the response.

No there doesn't appear to be anything in the logs. I look at the access log to determine when it stopped responding. So I can usually determine it down to the minute, but there is never an entry in any of the other Apache logs or Windows logs around that time. I don't see any unusual entries anywhere.

When this happens, what error do you see? You don't happen to have IIS installed on the same computer by any chance, do you?

I would guess ZoneAlarm is not dealing with the ports properly. I would try uninstalling that ZoneAlarm patch you mentioned first.

I read elsewhere that firewalls and AV software can cause apache to act oddly in some situations.

Wishdiak,
I don't have IIS installed. When Apache stops responding and I try to access the site, I get the cannot find server message in IE, as if it isn't there.

I think I will have to try uninstalling ZoneAlarm to see if that makes a difference.
