apache + mod_ssl + openssl problem

I have set up the openssl 0.9.6 with apache 1.3.19, and mod_ssl (version suitable for 1.3.19). I have all the settings in httpd.conf set correctly. I am getting this error in errorlogs:
[error] OpenSSL: error:0D09F007:asn1 encoding routines:d2i_X509:expecting an asn1 sequence

I wanted to know what this is and how I can fix it.
Any help is much appreciated!

Is it posible to install mod_ssl to an apache server which was not compiled with that module?
