apache error 408

I have seen following messages in the log files on apache.

"-" 408 - "-" "-" "-"


and then apache stop to respond to request from outside though it works from inside. There were around 600+ messages of this type. Any help on this would be appreciated.

by the way we are running apache 1.3.29. So is it worth upgrading to new version 2.0.? which could help resolve this issue ?
