where is the default test page/index.html located in the apache/2.0.40 RedHat 8 directory structure?

Most likely wherever your httpd.conf says that the DocumentRoot is.

This is where I am referred to in the document root. There is blurb that says symbolic links and aliases may be used to point other locations.

DocumentRoot "/var/

http://www/html"

The only directory under /var/

http://www/html

is usage. usage contains a index.html, but it pertains to Webalizer.

I created a test index.html and left in:

/var/

http://www/html

When I accessed the server the next time, my test page came up. I still have no idea where the default index.html is coming from. Your tip on the Document Root definitely clued me in. Many thanks!!!!

I have tried to search for index.html only, but still have not figure out the correct syntax.

Your DocumentRoot is usually defined in your httpd.conf somewhere in the middle. You can change the directory it points to, but...
If you're using VirtualHost containers, each VirtualHost can have its own DocumentRoot.
