Hi All,
I am trying to spilt the DSL at my friends place but the problem is he has AOL with DSL provided by Verizon. The DSL modem is said to be an "always ready" modem, meaning when the connection is needed, or requested by the AOL user it will go through, otherwise it's inactive. I am using a linksys router, I have been very succesful in setting up similar networks but never with anything like this. Has anyone had any luck with anything like this? Also I was told by AOL Tech that the modem should be using a PPoE connection. Thanks for the help :)

Hey JefH,

Sorry to hear about the netgear thing. Never tried with a netgear, I will try it today though. Did you try doing this with a plain old switch? I was able to do this whole AOL DSL thing with using a plain Linksys 10/100 MB switch. I have it running right now, so unless you are looking to do some home networking you can accomplish getting about 4 pc's online via AOL DSL at the same time. Hope it helps.

This sounds like a networking issue - NOT an AOL issue!

OK...after going crazy I finally figured it out. It was soo simple that I really was embarrassed. All I did was took the dsl and plugged it into the uplink port (NOT WAN) on the router and BAM, it all worked

Generally speaking, Router to PC uses Cat5 straight through cable (on uplink port), router to dsl modem uses Cat5 crossover cable (on WAN port).

Buy a different cable!
Marc.

am i the only one that has read this thread and wondered why people still use AOL. "you can't do this... you can't do that....." i have never in my life heard of so many problems. how 'bout offering a service that don't put restrictions on you (useing that damn AOL browser for one) and that doesn't make deals with other "wonderfull" companies for hardware. (d-link, Linksys ect.) In the area I live there are three different cable/dsl providers and i've yet to come across this AOL DSL Linksy D-link blah..blah... we get the modem, hook it up and open whatever browser we want. the end

don't get me wrong, i'm not trying to upset anyone or anything like that (except for AOL). there is just alot of animosity between AOL and i. ;-) i've spent many hours trying to fix thier customers problems. (haven't we all) "Jack of all trades. Master of none."

AOL DSL - continuing this thread: is it really true that to use a router (wired or wireless) you need AOL version of LINKSYS or ACTIONTEC product? I know some of you have slammed AOL, but for a lot of non-techie, AOL is really the simplest way for them to get to the internet, including AIM and chats. So, lets stick to the topic. The reason I asked is that I bought an ACTIONTEC wireless router model 3010 from a local electronic store, followed all the direction and even called AOL to make sure that Home Network is set correctly,m but I still could not connect. Ended up returning the router to the store. Should I try again?

AOL uses PPPoE (Point to Point Protocol over Ethernet)

The router has to support that to stand any chance at all of being configurable for AOL DSL.

BTW, AOL Tech do not support home networking (even with their DSL packages). This is reflected in the training of their Tech support - so you either had an unsupported modem, or an unsupportive tech guy :)

Hey Gang, Here's an ez-1, I have configure my linksys wap router to work via the wan connection and my up link port on my switch/hub and it works. I can get to aol from all 9 of my home pc's,(and you know there's a but),but when I attempt to use my IE browser I can not reach any sites. The browser works fine if I connect the ethernet dsl modem directly to my pc's but no through the router. any clue as to how I can fix this?

Maybe this will help all you AOL DSL users. First of ALL...when you recieve your DSL modem, expect anywhere between 3 to 5 days for line provisioning. Second of all, if you are having problems with LINKSYS ROUTERS , YOU MUST USE ROUTERS WITH FIRMWARE 1.43 OR HIGHER. The linksys router itself must have V2 at the end of the model number, IE: Befsr41v2. V1 will NOT handle the firmware upgrade.
Any other questions you may have, refer to AOL KEYWORD "HOME NETWORK" It has all your firmware updates, all router model numbers that are compatable with AOL, DSL, and screen shots of set up with either DSL, or Cable install. Other than that, anything you get from BEST BUY, or any other computer places, IT MUST SAY...AOL APPROVED on the box. I hope this helps all of you! happy surfing!

I too spend considerable time flip-flopping back and forth between Linksys (using the recommended BEFSR41) and AOL. Both parties blaming the other. Linksys was very diligent in trying to resolve the problem on all fronts. Going into DOS and checking IPN addresses; changing addresses; changing network settings; resetting;Turn it all off; turn it all on; Like that would make any diffrence! you name it we did it. Returned my router to Best Buy and got a second Linksys; no difference. Spent almost a week of my vacation trying to get it to split. Would work with no router; but as soon as you hooked up the router it would not recognize the modem. Yes, it did sometimes half work on the port entrance instead of the WAN; but that slows your speed down and is just defeating the purpose of the router. Might as well splice the wires; probably have better luck. Any how sent it all back and going with the SBC $29.99 plan for a year with free AOL provided by SBC. Should have done that in he first place; why pay twice as much for half as much. Loyalty in the finance world is non existent; why should it be any different for DSL providers. Provide a decent product or get swallowed up by the Competition. Thanks Mr. Case were ever your working at now. papted@aol.com

I am working on a friend's Gateway with a P2 processor. For months they have been using Verizon with AOL as their DSL provider without problems. Suddenly in the last two weeks, they have had to try and connect three times or more, getting the Goodbye voice message before ever getting into the site. It is sporadic in that sometimes it works immediately and others the second, third or fourth try.

Once they do get in to the site, the computer acts as if it is 28k, taking forever to load either email or internet sites and often never completes. They have to CTRL+ALT+DEL and start again. Any thoughts?

I have Win Xp Pro, Aol 7.0 Satellite (with modem return). I am having problems getting my network running again. It was runnig perfectly. 56 v.92 modem to wall, USB satellite modem to PC, used a crossover cabble from nic in host to uplink port, ip for host 192.168.0.1 gateway 255.255.255.0.
router setup wan 192.168.0.2 gateway 192.168.0.1 dns 148.78.255.200 148.78.255.201, DHCP enabled and client pc set to obtain ip. I then used WInproxy software to share the AOL, But cannot get it to work again. Linksys router BEFW11S4 v2.

AOL is a pain. Unfortunately, some of use have roommates who love AOL and we want in on the DSL connection! I spent quite a while researching this and decided to get a Linksys router. I hooked it all up and it worked great - but only when I was signed onto AOL. I don't want to be on AOL all the time. Plus, I was networking with a MAC and AOL for OSX doesn't support the dsl dialup.

AOL does use PPPOE. I could connect to the internet now using AOL but using PPPOE if the modem was directly connected to the computer (this worked on the mac and the xp machine). However, for some reason, the router could not connect to AOL through PPPOE.

So - I tried something that I don't think should work... but does.

I have a broadband blaster dsl modem. It supports both USB and Ethernet connections to the client computer. So I plugged my MAC into the Ethernet port on the DSL modem and the XP Machine into the USB port. I set up the computers to connect via PPPOE and it works great - without a router!

Both Windows XP and MAC have built in PPPOE dialing support. For the username you put your full aol email address with the @aol.com and your aol password.

I'm returning my router and getting my $60 back!

I have 2 xp machine and AOL DSL on one and regular AOL Dial up on the other...2 seperate accounts...I'm trying to consolidate on expenses...Basically i'm trying to split the AOL DSL on both machine so that I wont have to pay for AOL DSL twice and I don't want to buy a router ethier...How do I do it?

Sometimes, depending on the router, if it is a G series, you may want to put an Inactive screen name (something the AOL user will not ever use, execpt in the router config. and it can NEVER be deleted, because if it is, you wont be able to log on) in the user name,(this will give you a connection for "always on"), all lower case IE: america online, and the password, HAS TO BE THE SAME AS THE PASSWORD IN THE AOL SERVER. if the user changes the password in AOL, it will need to be changed in the router config as well. Hope this helps!
