Hi All,
I am trying to spilt the DSL at my friends place but the problem is he has AOL with DSL provided by Verizon. The DSL modem is said to be an "always ready" modem, meaning when the connection is needed, or requested by the AOL user it will go through, otherwise it's inactive. I am using a linksys router, I have been very succesful in setting up similar networks but never with anything like this. Has anyone had any luck with anything like this? Also I was told by AOL Tech that the modem should be using a PPoE connection. Thanks for the help :)

dslqueen, you are wrong. The router will not work if you are using AOL's DSL powered by verizon if you plug it into the WAN port. If you subscibe to DSL from verizon and also subscribe to AOL, then it will work with the WAN port. AOL has a proxy though, which requires you to use the AOL software to connect. You cannot get internet access without it (No way i've discovered at least). And the WAN port doesn't work for some reason (Probably because of the proxy). If anyone figures out how then post, because i would love to know how. The AOL software hogs all my resources. I'm sure they put the proxy there so you are forced to see their advertisements.

eNLOGIC...i was referring to just verizon dsl...i apologize if i was not clear...you will see that i made mention of not knowing the issue about the router not working with the AOL dsl...towards the end of my post thank you...for allowing me to clarify...some of the other posts were not clear as to who had which service..i was simply offering some suggestions *ducks and hides* "don't shoot me i'm only the messenger!"

eNLoGiC, you are correct! This post is for AOL DSL!!!!! I believe there is another post out there for Verizon's dsl service for which I have done similar setups for offices. If people need to know how to set that up without or with a router I can also post that info. Hope all is well :)

sorry for the mixup *ducks and hides* "don't shoot me i'm only the messenger!"

So, AOL DSL should work using the uplink port, not the WAN port. Has anyone been successful also getting wireless connectivity? I'm going to help out my sister who ordered AOL DSL and would appreciate any tips.

I wish to thank the person who solved my AOL DSL problem. I installed Linksys network everywhere 10/100 Network cards in my two Win98 computers. Purchased Linksys Etherfast Cable/DSL Router w/4 ports, Cat 5 cable. Have Broadxent Broadband blaster DSL Modem supplied by AOL, who also sent 4 phone line filters, and have AOL Plus version 7.0 installed on both PC's. Followed standard instructions for installation and configuration. Original PC would connect, added PC would not. So I was out $120.00 (before rebates). Spent days pouring over suggestions from this site, other sites, AOL site and Linksys site. Tried various configurations, messing with PPPoE and assigning IP address, all kinds of stuff. WEll, per instructions, I had plugged Cat 5 from the DSL modem etherport to the WAN on the router in all attempted configurations. Then I decided it wouldn't hurt to try a bizarre idea from this site - instead of going from modem to WAN in the router, went to the Uplink port. I do medical billing software support, but I'm not very hardware saavy; but since is can be used to connect another router, I figured nothing would fry. It worked immediately!!. Both computers can sign on at the same time; I do need to use different screen names, but that's OK. Both computers don't need to be on, even when just PC2 is being used. I can see the other computer in Network Neigborhood, etc. Then I thought of the darkside - this is too good to be true - I'm probably totally exposed. So I went to various sites to test my security and NOTHING could get through. My port was considered STEALTH!!!!!!
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!
I think your handle is MANDAN or close to it. Well, you are my hero. Now my 13 yr. old will stay off my computer, and I'll get a chance to surf once in a while!!xoxoxoxox

Hey Janet Planet,

You are more then welcome!!!! Trust me, I am a college student therefore I know what it's like not being able to get online and be on the phone at the same time!!!!! Hope all is well!

I love you all so much!!! This was the answer I was looking for on my home network. I have a D-Link 4 port wireless router and AOLDSL through SBC powered by a Westell Wirespeed DSL modem. I followed all the instructions from D-link and nothing. Couldn't get desktop computer to even log on. Spent all last night trying all kinds of goofy stuff. D-link support said no AOL compatibility. I looked all over the internet for solutions. Then I saw your posts and swapped the DSL cord from the WAN port to the first LAN port and Booyah I can get on. Now I need to see if my laptop can log on. And after installing the necessary DSL files, it can log on at the same time. You wonderful beautiful people, I love you so......

Thanks to all for the AOL DSL feedback. After months of getting BS from AOL tech support and Linksys...Used the AOL dsl broadband blaster to the Linksys router uplink and it all works great...Running three computers on AOL 7.0, one account and all three screen names can be connected at the same time...AOL will not tell you this they will tell you to buy there router, which I did but will be going back tomorrow...

ok, all i've heard about are lynksys routers. I am on AOL DSL. I was sent an actiontec router. I have a broadxent modem. I have connected the modem and router in every configuration i can think of, still nothing. My DSL line works fine, until i connect the router. The setup goes through fine, but when it is time to connect, aol cannot find a connection. Is there anyone out there who has experienced the same problem with the actiontec router?

I have a somewhat similar problem and I am not sure if this will solve it (Or if buying a router will solve it).

I am using verizon DSL for my connection and aol Bring Your Own Access for email, i only use one computer.

My problem is that once connected to dsl using winpoet i fail to maintain active connectivity, so eveerytime i open ie to browse i have to click "try again" in the work offline or try again screen. Additionally embedded hyperlink images in my aol mail fail to load b/c no ie connection is detected (even though i am online).

please help, my fiance is getting very frustrated and i am at my wits end with fixing this.

thank you so much for your time
-jeff

my hardware setup:
pentium 3 running win2000pro sp3
netgear 10/100 ethernet card connected as only computer directly via cat5 to westell dsl modem.
westell dsl modem connected to phoneline.

I just got my dsl and im also wondering how long it takes to get the confirmation email frol aol. I got it all hooked up and ready, and when i turn it on it connects but then tells me the line is not yet ready. when do i get the mail?

after reading all of the above i've realized i've been had with the router... i did manage to set it up, an it's connecting to aol fine, except nothing else works, i have to surf the net through aol, i can't use just ie or netscape
anybody got any idea what it's happening

i have westell modem plugged into the actiontec router which is plugged into lynksys hub (usb cable/port in actiontec seems to be screwed up) which is connecting to two comps

any advice will be greatly appreciated :-(

I have AOL DSL provided by SBC, and I hate the fact that I have to sign on to AOL to use the internet. Is there any way to make it so that I don't have to sign on to my AOL every time. My friend has VerizonDSL and he just opens opens his little InternetExplorer to surf. Also, I don't want to buy a router or anything. So is there a way to manipulate my settings to help me!???

PLEASE HELP!!!!!

Hey, I am going to be receiving my AOL DSL kit in about 2 weeks and I have a Linksys router ready, but here's a real challenge for some of you. Right now I am using the Diamond Home Networking through my phone lines. These computers have to use sharing through Wingate because there are no methods for routing. Etherneting my house would be quite difficult and I plan to do it slowly (one location at a time), so until then I was thinking about hooking up an internet slave that basically routed the DSL connection through the ethernet port and out the Home Networking phone line. To make it even more confusing, I'm trying to decide which phone line to put the DSL on, because right now dial-up is used on line 2, as is the network. Diamond claims that the DSL connection will work with their phoneline product, but it confuses me to think of a network and DSL running on the same phone line. If anyone knows anything about this, please feel free to offer an opinion.

Also, I plan on eventually adding many ethernet ports in the house, so if my uplink port has to be used for the connection, can i plug a hub into one of the router's other ports?

THat is the way AOL makes it all work. You have to go thru them b4 conect is made to the net.AOL costs more becouse of their "perks" which some poeple dont want nor need. Ther are direct conect ISP's. Try someone local or Earthlink or SBCpacbell (probebly yur phone co.)or others that don't charge as much(abt$15.00 for dial up)or abt $30.00 for DSL. AOL is #1 couse they say soo on TV.They also charge among the highest for home service.

I just bought Linksys BEFW11S4 v2 Router/WAP to work with AOL DSL. I was able to connect DSL cable to WAN port (not uplink) and it did connect me to internet thru AOL. However other PCs still need to connect to AOL. So this is as good as connecting DSL cable to uplink port.
Does anybody have any idea of what maybe wrong ?
Thanks!

I have a Linksys BEFW11S4 v2 Router/WAP an ATT Broadband Cable. My home network has 2 wired and 2 wireless PC's on the network. My wife uses AOL. Everything worked OK until I upgraded her computer to XP. It will connect to the internet with IE6.0 fine and to the main AOL screens, but no access to the Internet via the AOL browser. Tried all the AOL suggestions, nothing helps. I upgraded to AOL 7.0 and then 8.0. I have also done two XP installs. When I connect to AOL, I get a dialog box stating AOL has detected an error with the Internet connection - please shutdown and reboot. Any help is appreciated.

A friend of mine has AOL powered by Verizon DSL and just bought a Netgear MR814 router. Couldn't get it to work so I called Netgear support and they told me the router won't work with AOL DSL and to switch ISPs. Apparently AOL DSL uses a proprietary authentication protocol not compatible with the Netgear router (What a wonderful AOL feature!?![thumbsdown]). I was wondering if anyone else has had a similar experience.

I was thinking of having them switch to a different ISP for Internet and since she wants the AOL GUI to use BYOA. Either that or return the Netgear and get a Linksys router. Anyone have any ideas or have a similar Netgear AOL DSL setup that works?
