I am using AOL 7 with DSL powered by Verizon. I recently added a Linksys wireless router and now have a sparatic problem. I can connect into AOL just fine. I can than browse all the internal AOL features, but if I try to access a website that is outside the AOL enviroment, it hangs up. It is weird, becasue soemtimes it will work and than other times it just tries to search and hangs. It resolves the web address, but just can't seem to access the ip address. This happens both if I try to access the location with IE or with the internal AOL browser. Anyone experince a similar problem or may have any ideas what is causing the is issue.

No, that didn't help, but thanks for the tips. Everything connects correctly and it works some time. It is weird, it seems if I log into AOL, but go directly to the web it works, but if I click around within the AOL enviroment, and than try and browse the internet, it hangs up. I am not sure if I am being clear with my problem. In general, it is just a weird problem I have never seen before.

PalmIdiot,

Are you using AOL DSL provisioned by Verizon or are you using AOL with a Verizon provided DSL line? There is a distinct difference.

When AOL provides the DSL, they have their proprietary clamps on the service and these restrictions may be a factor.

If it is a Verizon DSL and just using AOL, there are other conditions to be checked.

Can you start the DSL, not log into AOL and use IE to browse the internet?

There are a couple of conditions that should be checked then. Take a look at the FAQ here

If you are using a USB modem or are using a Windows Driver Model (WDM) modem, check that out. The forums are also excellent to get help from other users.

If you need more, post back here.

Good luck,

I have a new linksys BEFW11S4 and am trying to use it with aol DSL running aol version 8; I have also tried it with aol version 7. I can get aol to run and can see non secure internet sites from within aol. I can not access secured sites it seems from within aol. Specifically I can see the hotmail login screen ( but can not login when switched to
Also, I can not use an exernal internet explorer to see anything and I can not use other IP applications like the front end (blitzen) to the "internet chess club". If I get rid of the router and connect the computer directly to the dsl modem everything works fine. I have upgraded the linksys firmware to version 1.44.2 as suggested above and set up the router with PPPoE and username "amarica online" as suggested on the linksys link above. Any help is appreciated; I am close to bagging aol.

Baggin AOL whould be your best idea yet..

AOL stands for Almost On Line ! ! Sorry
