AOL Distorting Graphics

Does anybody know anything about AOL's proprietary "ART" graphic conmpression/proxy caching system -- and what it does to graphics? It turned our highly optimized JPGs into garbage. We figured out that using progressive JPGs solved the problem, but we'd like to get a better handle on the problem.
 
This won't be much help, but I have heard that there is no way around this problem other than what you are doing. Or, use gif's. I have heard this complaint with AOL before and have never heard of a real solution. Sorry.
 
Thank heavens for AOL. Imagine how boring designing websites would be without this monolithic albatross. Or webTV, for that matter. Thanks for the info!
