Hello. We used to have Lookout, an add-in for Outlook that made searching very fast and easy because it would return all types of items, not just emails and it would look in the body and subject line at once.

The problem is that because it had to index the mailbox, admins didn't like it and forced us to remove it from all PCs.

There was an uproar by users because Outlook's search feature is sooooo slow. I know how to do advanced searches so they "how to" of finding things is not a problem. The two problems are with speed and features. First, it's dead slow, our mailboxes are quite big. Second, you can only search one type of item at a time, emails or calendar, or contacts, but not everything at once.

We're on Office 2003. We've tried Outlook 2007 and the new Microsoft Desktop Search but they are slow as well. What happened to Lookout and is there a similar product out there we can try?

Thank you for your suggestions.

Actually, if you use "advanced find" (CTL+SHIFT+F or click on the "find" button and then select "advanced find" from the options drop down list) you can set the search for "any type of Outlook items" and then click on the browse button to select which folder(s) you want to search. The default is "Personal Folders" with "search subfolders" selected.

Of course, this doesn't resolve your first issue - speed.

Cheers.

cmeagan656, thank you so much for responding with this detail. Honestly, I guess I thought I knew everything about the stupid advanced search, but I didn't. Maybe if I give them this morsel, they'll leave me alone. :)

LOL. Don't count on it. From my experience, if you give them a morsel they often come back looking for more. :)

Hi Jtorres13,

I've been using X1 since 2 years and I would not change it for anything. It's brilliant. It looks through all arrchives (I store things in pst monthly files since 2005), all pdf file zipped in attachments of emails... It's great. I was well glad to pay the money to get the full copy.

Thank you for your suggestions. I will certainly check them out, although we've been cutting costs and new software is one of them. But, yes, thank yoo both.

Lookeen just released their version 2.0!

Pros:
+ Group policies for all exchange server modes: cached, uncached, online, offline.
+ Unlike Xobni it search WITHIN attachments, too!
+ Central indexing for work groups!
+ Ultra lightwight

Cons:
- After 14 days you will have a advertising screen before every search - then you have to buy it..

Its on

Cheers
