I realize this is a little off-topic for this forum, but...
I'm hearing about boot loops, random reboots, etc. but it's hard to tell how widespread. Besides, the press always smears an SP after it's released, makes for good headlines.

Ain't nuthin' perfect. Anybody tried it yet?

LB - ??? you posting a software question in a hardware forum ???

but about the SP3, went smooth on the second PC I ran it on... the problem with the first was that I downloaded was an RC and it got hung on the GDI32.DLL file (the one on the PC was newer than the one in the SP), and thus caused a BSOD... fix was easy...

I've had no problems with it, my PC is 4 years old, formatted a few months ago.

Try the forum779 there are a bunch of threads on the subject:

I wanted to hear from the builders in this forum. People I respect and trust, etc. Besides, there's a theory that some problems are related to AMD processors (which seems really unlikely to me), and that could be considered a hardware subject...

I downloaded the RTM from Major Geeks two weeks ago and installed it when I wiped & reloaded my work laptop. Saved loads of time in endless updating, but I needed to get SP1 before installing it. This is a best-case scenario, a fresh install, but a total of ZERO problems during or after SP3.

I myself don't like to plunge into Service Packs the moment they come out, I always let them simmer for a while have some bugs fixed before actually updating.

So I'll wait A while longer before updating, and first I'll try it on my test PC. Always keep a backup image of that one just in case something goes terribly wrong.

One of the threads I pointed to does in fact deal with the AMD issue. Seems there's something amiss there.

And remember that some of us actually lurk in more than one forum, so its likely you'll find builders in the XP forum and vice versa.

I just built 3 systems with ASUS M2A-VM motherboard, 2G RAM, and AMD X2 4000+ Brisbane 2.1GHz processor.

Installed XP SP2 OEM, Asus driver disk, and SP3. Then installed ie7 and any other MS updates that were out there and the rest of our pretty basic software load.

Haven't put them into production yet, but everything loaded without a hitch.

Did have 1 stick of bad Adata memory that needs to be replaced. Anybody else having problems with memory?

I had been buying Crucial pretty much exclusively, then got a bad batch of that. That about drove me crazy as it worked fine for about a month and then computer would just randomly go to a black screen. I have NEVER had bad memory from Crucial.

So, bought some A-data memory as it had good reviews and the first batch was great (and cheaper than Crucial). Now another bad stick. At least this one was DEAD, computer wouldn't even boot with it installed.

My install was to an Asus M6N notebook w/ Pentium M 1.6 w/ 2GB new DDR333 Buffalo RAM. Intel 855PM chipset, MSI wireless G card. as I mentioned, like buttah...

The AMD issue, is actually not an AMD issue at all, but rather an OEM issue (the lazy ones anyway) as they use the same IMG for INTEL and AMD...

as per the article that 2ffat points to in his post thread779-1472315 ...

I would classify myself as a late adopter. I may try it on my next build if the OS is available with the service pack. I have an Upgrade version of Vista and I may use that also. However, I need a copy of XP with at least service pack 2 to use it. I already bought a new computer case and I will probably buy the rest of the parts in a few weeks. I will probably try both.

If you do not like my post feel free to point out your opinion or my errors.

I installed it on my home system last night - until I read this post I had forgotten that I'd downloaded it!

My PC already had SP2 and all other patches as the OS was originally installed over a year ago. It's a dual-boot system (with Vista x64) and I have dozens and dozens of applications installed; the update went smoothly and I haven't encountered any problems so far. Note that I have an Intel CPU though.

Hi
Yup....5 times on various setups (my own) all without issue.
SP3 from XP SP2 installs if that helps, never from original non service pack XP.

Thanks for the warning.

I have installed SP3 on my Sony Intel core 2 duo, with out any problems and i was about to begin testing on the HP amd turion.

Further info on AMD and sp3 :

You receive a “Stop 0x0000007E” error message after you upgrade to Windows XP Service Pack 2 or Service Pack 3 on a non-Intel-processor-based computer

Installed just fine on my Compaq machine (xw4300 Pro WS) I will eventually get around to trying it on my AMD 4600X2 at some point, no real issues but not glaring differences either really.

Oh I had to repatch the tcp half open connections limit again but other then that I haven't actually noticed anything different.

The real world is not about exam scores, it's about ability.

I've now thrown it on a Dell GX280 SP1 buildout using the normal Widows Update files through WSUS, no issues so far.

Yesterday, SP3 got pushed, through Windows Update, onto some of the machines at work (Germany) all AMD, no problems at all, my main machine got 4 updates today again (though I did not stick around to find out which ones)...

so it does boil down to an OEM issue as mentioned in the article...
