I have a SBS server and I cant get into my server from home using a new install of Vista.. any suggestions?? I think I need to update my RDP version on the server. But how?

Any ideas would be appreciated..

I don't have any issues using RPD from a Vista machine to an Windows 2003 Server.
Check the Vista firewall and make sure that RDP is allowed through.

Nope, i disabled the firewall and i get the same message:

Remote Desktop cannot verify the identity of the computer you want to connect to. This problem can occur if:

1.the remote computer is running a version of windows that is earlier than windows Vista.
2. The remote computer is configured to support only the RDP security layer.

Then it attempts to connect but doesnt succeed.

I do know that if you disable the firewall in Vista a lot of communication can't happen any more. You are better off with the firewall enabled.

Same as dudenjersey , I get the message you posted above, but when I click Yes is connects.

That's connecting to the original SBS2003 (not R2), and with Vista Business edition (build 6000), Windows firewall running 'out-the-box'

Couple of things come to mind -

1) Vista tries to log on with the wrong domain name and fails - I have to retype the correct ones into the SBS logon box before it works.

2) My Vista user is in the Administrators group.

Additional Windows SBS client computer setup tasks"
You cannot use the Windows SBS 2003 client deployment tools to join a Windows Vista-based computer to a Windows SBS network

Make sure any firewalling on both computers is set to allow Remote desktop.

Is there anything similar to this for SBS?

Remote Desktop Connection 6.0 client update is available for download in the Microsoft Download Center

vista is using your vista profile even if you are logged into vista as "adminstrator" most likley when you installed vista you used another name since you have to make changes to you Vista install to log in as administrator. So vista is combining your credentials/profile I havent found any forums how to rectify this. Im glad i made my machine a dual boot so that i can always revert to xp when something in Vista doesnt work

Hey Linney,
I read through that article and it sounds more like they are talking about making my vista PC a client on the domain, which im not trying to do. Simply join through rdp.

As far as the Status of my admin account, i believe that i was in the admin account, but i didnt know it wasnt as straight forward as i thought, ill check it out.

Sorry, I was merely trying to direct you to this part of that article, "On the Exceptions tab, click to select the Remote Assistance and Remote Desktop check boxes, and then click OK.", which is mentioned in the paragraph "Additional Windows SBS client computer setup tasks", of that article.

My question may be similar,

Using the new RDP client that comes with Vista and can download with XP here is what I think your issue and mine is,

When one connects the darn new RDP client puts in the host you are connecting to such as if you are connecting to remote.user.com, the stupid client puts in that address as the domain name!

How utterly lame is that, the appears to not be a place to enter in the domain name like before. So, of course the domain name is not going to be the same as the stinking host name or fdqn your connecting to.

The username entry would look like:

remote.user.com/administrator
password

Or
1.1.1.1/administrator
password

The logon fails of course, then you have to manually go up and clear out the false domain crap and correct the username, then logon is fine.

I am going to make a new post on this but wanted to add this so you get alerted if this is your issue.

Jason

Your slashes are wrong

It should be something like

yourdomain\username

Just go ahead and type in the domain\username and it will save it for you the next time. You might can connect by using username@yourdomain as well, but I'm not positive about that.

I am having a slightly different problem. When I try to connect to a Windows 2003 server through my Vista client, it begins to connect. It even begins to show me the desktop. Then the RDP session freezes for a couple seconds. Finally it give me an error messege "Your remote desktop session has ended. The connection to the remote computer was lost, possibly due to network connectivity problems. Try connecting to the remote computer again. If the problem continues, contact your network administrator."
But if I connect via VPN then RDP to the server, I connect without any problems. This is causing me major issues as I do not have VPN access to all of my clients.
When running Windows XP, this is not an issue.

icedvigilante,

What, if anything, is showing up in the Event Viewer?

Can you test the connecting in "Safe Mode with Networking" from the Client?

No messages in the event viewer, and the error still exists in Safe Mode with Networking.
This issue is also appearing when trying to connect to a Windows 2000 Terminal Server. And the same quick fix works. I setup a VPN connection then I can log into the server without any issues.
Could there be a problem with a setting on my local machine as I am connecting to the internet with a wireless network card.
Card - Linksys WUSB54G V4
WAP - Linksys WAP54G
Router - Linksys RV042
When I installed Vista, I did update my wireless card driver as well as the firmware for the router and WAP.
Before Vista this was not an issue. XP was able to connect even with the new Terminal Services Client.

Correction to my wording. I connect to my home network with a wireless network card. NOT connect to the internet with a wireless card.

turns out the issue it related to the Linksys RV042 router. Linksys fixed the issue in the most recent firmware upgrade.

I know you've gotten your problem solved but I just wanted to post my result after 4 days of playing around with RDP from Vista Business into SBS 2003 Premium.

After all kinds of trial and error logging on using the SBS machine's IP address, I tried to log on using the computer name instead and that solved the problem. HTH for others.
