Hi there ,

I wanted to know that can DVD's be run on a CD-ROM drive. I have a Samsung 48X CD-ROM drive on my system (with
Pentium 2, 450 mmx processor) . Is there any way or any software by installing which i would be able to run DVDs on my system ?

Awaiting reply ,
thanks,
Udit.

In a word, No! The two technologies are completely different. If you want to use DVD's your will have to buy a DVD drive which shouldn't be priced too bad anymore.

Thanks Mike .

Just to extend my question futher , if i add a DVD Drive
to my system , would i be able to retain the already present CD ROM drive . Can i have both of them on my system . ?

Thanks

As long as you have a free IDE connection for one, yes you can. I have 2 hard drives, a burner, and a DVD in one computer.

2 cents worth- most computers have 4 connections for IDE devices. Usually the CD-ROM is on a separate data cable that the hard drive. The 2 positions are called primary and secondary, and each of them have a master and slave designation, which you set on the device by installing a small jumper in the correct position when you install it.

I would put the 2 optical drives, (CD_Rom and DVD)on one cable, and keep the hard drive (Magnetic technology)on the other. The hard drive is usually much faster in transferring data, and putting a slower drive on the same bus will slow down the hard drive transfer rates.

Do a great deal of comparing prices and features. MOst DVD players also can play CD-ROM and CD-R discs, possibly also CD-RW, and I think some of the newer ones might be able to create or 'burn' CD-r and CD-RW, maybe DVD, not sure on this. Get as many features as possible, you get what you pay for..

You are right...there are combo CD burner/DVD drive. But I personally don't like the idea of that. What if the DVD laser goes out? or the burning laser? You wouold need to buy a whole new drive?

But anyway...Good luck!

Why not just get a DVDrom , which can read CDs, DVDs, CDr, CDrw, and most other media, and get a burner seperately. Karl Blessing aka kb244{fastHACK}

Hi all,

I have this 3com/usr modem given to me without a driver and just in a cardboard box. Put it in COM3 to replace 28k modem original pre installed in COM1.

In win 95, I get the following msg: another program is using your modem, cannot access modem, and something about it being unplugged.

What's going on? I think the modem is dead...
