What happened - get uploads 3x faster than downloads:

Background:

Three Gateway PIII, 700 MHz PC's, Win 98, peer-to-peer.

I have a problem with one PC, a Gateway PIII 700 MHz. Have swapped NIC's, swapped port connections on Action Tech router-switch and by-passed the in-house wiring CAT 5.

In all cases - the downloads are 1/3 normal speed including Internet files. The other PC's transfer data correctly, at high speed.

Any ideas? (I think I'll take the PC into Gateway for service, soon).

On the problem PC, try to lock the speed of the NIC at 100/half or 10/half, and see if this helps. I suspect it is somehow stuck on full duplex, and the switch is not.

I tried to remain child-like, all I acheived was childish.

Well your thought is interesting, but I have switched out the NIC card as explained earlier, but same result.

Not clear on how to "lock" the speed at 100/half. Under Win 98, I can change TCP parameters - ip address for example or other advanced features. Pls explain.

Under the properties of the NIC rather than IP you should be able to select connection type. It may be on Auto/10-fd/10-hd/100-fd/100-hd etc.

Grenage - Trying your options, here is what I get.

I see under properties of 3Com EtherLink 10/100 PCI:

Driver Type - tab
(*)Enhanced mode (32 bit and 16 bit) NDIS driver
( )Real mode (16 bit) NDIS driver
( )Real mode (16 bit) ODI driver

[* is the chosen option above]

-----------

Bindings - tab
[x] NetBEUI
[x] TCP/IP

-------------

Advanced - tab

"Click the setting you want to change on the left and then select its new valu on the right" [These are the values now, how do I find your parameters? See values:]

Property: Value
802.1p Support Disable
Down Poll Rate 8
Flow Control Enable
Media Type Hardware Default
NDIS Driver Version Auto Select
Rx Checksum Offload Disable
Tx Checksum Offload Disable

Have you tried to reinstall TCP/IP on that computer? It's worth a shot.

Media Type may have the 10/half, vs 100/full settingss

I tried to remain child-like, all I acheived was childish.
