I'm still at the onset of my career and would like to plan ahead.

Right now I'm employed in a multinational consulting firm and I'm on data warehousing (application development) Oracle,PL/SQL,Pro*C,BusinessObjects,VMS are the stuffs which I'm working on and will likely to work on if I stay here in the next 2 years. After 2 years, what's my competitive value in the market with the skills I'll gain in the technologies mentioned above?

A hard call Joe.

First, as you work, you will discover what you enjoy and what your are good at. Add to this to what is "hot" for application development.

You will also be restricted to large corporate environment. For example, you may be restricted to supporting existing software, and not do much in the way of new development. Exsposure to a small shop may be beneficial at some time and offer more opportunities to explore.

What you will have achieved / learned after 2 years?
- You survivied. This is something.
- You will be able to determine if you can program "fast enough" and easily "read code" like a easy-read novell, or a classic in latin.
- Your fingers can take the abuse from lots of typing
- Exposure to change control, standards, etc
- If you like the corporate environment

What "they" will learn about you...
- Team player, leader material
- Solid programmer
- Follows instructions
- Shows innovation
- Willing to improve, accept criticism

It may be tough to go to a small shop after being in the corporate world for a number of years -- best to do it soon.

If you want to work at a small company, the key words are versatility and flexibility.

The printer ran out of toner? Better go on down to Office Max and buy some, because there's no IT department to do it for you. Need another network drop in your office? You'll probably have to bring your ladder in from home to string the wire thru the ceiling. Need to write a setup script for your product? Tag, you're it.

Someone who has been in the corporate world for a long time probably doesn't have this needed flexibility. I recall hearing about an IBM facility where the employees were not allowed to move their PC from the left side of the desk to the right side -- IT had to do it for them.
