Just finished college, have got a job where my responsibilities will include, DW reporting and oracle manufacturing, and the responsibilities will grow as the company is just switching to an all oracle system. I dont know a whole pile about things yet but am learning somthing new everyday,

So the question what is it like? Am i able for the role ( i was never a great programmer in college). What are the best things i can do to get real good at the job and what is the best(fastest route to gaining the DBA certification? What are the best things that i can do in my first 6 months?

Any help would be gratly appreciatated

Thanks
Concentrate on security, data integrity, backups. Set up a regular backup cycle. If possible set up a shadow system in case the main system goes down. Work out a contingency plan for any feasible type of problem including power outages, box breakdown, and destruction of the site. Protect the data - everything else can be replaced.

Hi ,
The DBA role is simply great , very challenging yet very rewarding.I am a DBA trainee myself.

Try your best to keep your basics clear , about the complete Oracle Architecture , How the Oracle Database is actually designed , how is the size of datafile decided , the number of control files to be used , the size of the redo log buffer etc . These things are very important and once you are clear with all this plus the way the database deals with whatever operating system you are using , you would find every thing a bit easier .Also be through with SQL PLUS commands.

All the best.
