Anti-Virus Suggestions

We are of a small business size ranging from 35-50 computers and about 15 servers. The OS's range from win2k pro -> windows xp Pro. We would be looking for a virus protection software with a reputation that will not fall apart or deny service within a few months. Any ideas?

I've been using Nod32 for a couple of months and have been quite impressed so far.

I've used Sophos (loved it but expensive) and CA e-Trust. Both seem to work for us. We are about the same size as you.

I second Nod32
but AVG is good too I have used Avg on a free edition version only but if it is good for free, think what you my get if you pay for it.

Assuming you are using a Windows domain structure...

I like Symantec AV Corporate.
Everything is centrally controlled from one of your servers.
The AV software install is pushed out from the server, as well as all updates. The users cannot uninstall or disable it.
The cost is very competitive too, I think around $35 per computer (depends on quantity).

I would think that based on overall support and options and all, the Norton AV Corporate as dearingkr noted would be a good choice for a small business. I don't make the decisions for such where I work, but I do know that the Norton software seems to work very well, and our company size is over 1,000 total (a handful of locations). And the ability to control it all from one server, I am sure, is more than worth it, IF it does cost any more than others.

I do personally like AVG products, as I've used their free antivirus and antispyware programs for a few years now (antivirus, that is - spyware probably 6 months or less, as they just bought out a different company)

For their personal products, I have liked AVG better in that it has been just as effective, if not more effective, with MUCH less system resource usage than Norton.

However, at work, the Norton apps seem to work much more efficiently than they did on my home pc. I'm guessing the corporate version is programmed better.

As kjv1611 says, I use SAV Corporate for work and for my business clients. At home I use AVG free edition.

Another anti-virus package you might like to consider is this: - Anti-Vir.

In addition to antivirus software (some good products have already been recommended), you'll also need to make sure some anti-spyware software is in place to protect against other Internet-borne nasties.

- Spybot Search and Destroy
- Lavasoft's Ad-Aware
- AVG Anti-spyware (formerly Ewido Anti-Spyware / Ewido Anti-Malware)

Those all have free versions for home use and paid solutions for business use.

For further advice, Google on "Alliance of Security Analysis Professionals" and you'll see plenty of sites and forums giving sound security advice.

If you don't know what eschatology is then don't worry; it's not the end of the world.

Oh, and it's worth mentioning that AVG now has a free "Anti-Rootkit" product that searches specifically for root-kits. I do not recall whether it provides protection or not, but it's definitely worth looking at.

It's worth bearing in mind that AVG does have a network (corporate edition). We use it here, controlling installation, updates and configuration from one server.

It's also ridiculously cheap, when compared to Sophos/Mcafee/Norton etc.

Carlsberg don't run I.T departments, but if they did they'd probably be more fun.
