After our network connection fiasco (thread buried somewhere below), we've decided to officially PUNT Norton. The software works great, but it's too much of a resource hog & we're constantly having to tweak it to work with our other legitimate software.

Both AVG and BitDefender get really good reviews. Any thoughts? Thanks again for all the help. This site is great.

I've been using AVG on an old Win95 setup I have kept for software compatibility testing and so far v7.5 will not run on it. I wonder if that is that likely to change?

regards Hugh,

Hugh - I've got AVG 7.5 running on an old 95 (OSR2) test rig! Perhaps a component or 2 need updating to latest available version?

wolluf,

Thanks. That's good to hear. I'll have to try it again.

Could be my rig is not OSR2 though I wonder how I'd get that update now?

regards Hugh,

Ok Bill,
I think I am dense ....lol
Linney where do you relate to the Langa List by Fred Langa or Windows secrets by Brian Livingston????????

By the way I think its great they combined.
and they are well worth the money for a paid subscription.

To note the only subscription I pay for.

No linney i didn't read the article (but obviously i should of :)), i'd started receiving the warnings and assumed the writing was on the wall for free AVG. I should have more faith in their generosity :)

When you are the IT director, it's your job to make sure the IT works. If it does work they know already and if it doesn't, they don't want to hear your pathetic excuses.

I'm all for shareware and freeware, but personally I wouldn't mind paying a few bucks a month for AVG. I mean the company's got to stay in business somehow. What I don't want to do is pay for a subscription, and then find out that there is some fatal flaw and my system is actually not fully protected. Norton was an absolute system hog, but I never had a doubt that my system was covered.

Speaking of (and off topic), Norton AntiSpam did a great job at blocking banner ads while surfing the web. Now that Norton is gone, all those stupid banner ads are back. Any recommendations on that front?

linney,
just wondering what bcastner meant on meet Linney....LOL
and I do agree with you I like to read Fred's newsletter alot more then Secrets....I do think it will pan out pretty nice once the bugs are ironed out of the newsletter.

I have to say this has been one of the better posts on the forum....lol

The poll Bill Castner linked to didn't include the Comodo AV product.

I've met one person who swears by their firewall and AV. Anyone here have any experience with them?

The firewall is interesting.

The AV product by their own reckoning is Beta and not yet up to their quality standards (?). I have been trying to help someone uninstall the AV product to stop errors at system startup, but even the Commodo Forum on the Web admits it cannot remove the installation errors! It is very rough and you have better choices in Antivir, Avast and even AVG.

The Commodo website though gave me the creeps. I personally would avoid the AV product, but you could consider the firewall.

I installed Avast V 4.7 on the 16th of Nov and I am a little concerned that it hasn't found any new virus definitions to update itself with. Is this normal?

I can't find any documentation for version 4 either, only version 3. Isn't there any? Or have I just failed to find the pdf?

As soon as you mentioned it I remembered the AV was still in testing. Oops.

I have read a couple of pieces praising the firewall.

Just out of curiosity, what do you find creepy about the site?

I have used Avast for a few years now... I pay for the pro version but my family has the free version. it usually updates in the morning when I turn on the computer. you do have to make an exception in the firewall so Avast can update. something else to look at I have repaired computers that have had virus and adware on them with an altered host file that lists all the different antivirus updates and home pages as 127.0.0.1..But...that can be another thread

if you have your sound on you can here it say it is updating...if it updates IAVS then it updates fairly quick then it is done for the day. if it needs a program update it will need a reboot. I found Norton to hog the bandwidth and just generally be a pain it in the $#@%^. for all its hoopla saying I am updating...it doesn't let you do much more While it is updating....
so I appreciate an Antivirus with a small footprint and unobtrusive updating.

I run 7 computers in my house with no problems and no virus's... I especially appreciate the feature that monitors chat (2 teenagers)....LOL

Just out of curiosity, what do you find creepy about the site?

It was the Forum. 99% of the posts are employees praising their boss at Commodo and his agreeing how great the company is (and by reflection himself). When a technical question is asked by a user the response is always that the product is Beta. That's it for the response.

The reason for the lack of greater technical support enthusiasm in my opinion is that the installer for the firewall caused issues so severe that only a clean install of XP could remove the incomplete MSI installer stub from the system.
