Hi! I run four PCs all installed within Antec Sonata Cases (very quiet)... testing a board today I got a christmas cracker stylee "pop!" and a wee puff of smoke out of a suddenly silent PSU... like a fusible link had blown

Any fusible links inside these babies? Mains power to PSU still 100% PSU, PSU tester block

an Atcec PSU tester which loads the PSU into operation remains unlit ;(

Any thoughts!!!

JB

Blown a capacitor!!
Is it under warranty?
If not remove the cover and visually examine.

WARNING! high internal voltages even when unplugged.
Just be careful.

It probably blew a capacitor or other component. Most PSUs have a small glass encapsulated fuse too but I would not expect smoke to come from that.

If it really is a capacitor that's blown, then I'd say the chances are that it will probably have taken or at least weakened other components in the chain. Unless you are really stuck without a spare PSU and have the time tools and expertise to troubleshoot, it's generally not financially viable to repair these days...

Please take very seriously Martin's advice re high voltages.

Perhaps the guy at Antec reads the Tek-Tips forums!

Good luck.

Spoke to Antek via email, I have returned the PSU to them, I have been offered a replacement pending examination of the PSU, the same board fired up fine with a 250w PSU so it sounds like the PSU failed rather than it being torched by my incompetance... 3kg cost £17.00 to send to NL from UK via Interparcel 3 day service who subbed the job out to UPS!!!!

Will keep you posted, Antecs after sales service is great (probably because so little goes wrong?)
