Like many here i have a network problem.

This is the slow xp network browsing problem.

I have found many suggestions and have fixed half my problems

The problem is I have the three computer in a network sharing a hub/router. the 98se machine is the server for some files and one
DOS based program.

The two XP machines are fast when I look throw Net Neighbourhood at the shared directores on the server (ie. mapped drives)

They have a few directories with 100mb worth of data files.
When everything was 98se it was fast to browse these directories throw the Programs that accessed these directories.

But since we have upgraded to XP workstations the browsing is really slow. (10 to 20) seconds just bring them up.

****** On the first XP pro machine *********

I tried all that i could find to fix this problem..
I removed the string in the registry ---local machine, software, microsoft, windows, exporer, etc and removed the D************** string
I went add added off the XP disk the Net beui protocol under the value added directory
I went and add in the TCP/IP protocol advanced and set enable the netbios.

AND probably a few other I cant remember. and

BINGO it finally works worked and everything is GOOD.

BUT i went and tried to add the same things to the other machine
and set it up exactly the same and NO GOOD.....

I then moved the files from the 98se machine to the SECOND XP machine and tried to access the files from the FIRST machine that now running great and it was slow again, But fast ot the 98se machine.

What could be the problem ?????????

FIRST machine
XP PRO
PENTIUM 3 700
256 RAN
FAT32 FORMATED 20GIG hd

sERVER
WIN98 SE
PENTIUM 2 266
128MB RAM
FAT32 FORMATTED 40GIG HD

SECOND MACHINE
XP PRO
PENTIUM 4 1.8GIG
256M RAM
NTSF FORMATTED 40GIG HD

HELP PLEASE

ps accnt10nt is Axel7
but on the machine that has the slow problem :(

I have tried looking into the indexing and started the service but nothing..
I tried editing the registry like a practically Networked.com had listed on there site about slow browsing.
still nothing...
Anything else..

Hey Ax/AC, did you try installing iPX while putzing with the indexing service?

Hey Ax, Ya never answered me back =p

Try this too, Install iPX on your systems and set all your boxes to use "Frame Type" = 802.3 INSTEAD of auto (default) for the ETHERNET cards (not for dial-up applications).

I know this might sound pretty simple but try right clicking and selecy view->list, the smaller icons take a lot less time to drag across the network as opposed to the huge pictures XP uses - give that a go, you may notice an improvement browsing the directories

eesh .. I second that notion though Atropos! Better yet just use list =)

Seems that Axcel has moved on to other ventures though without notice to us =(

Sorry for not responding for a few days....

Went to Vegas for the week, :)

Was up 500.00 on the tables but still left vegas with 0 in the pockets...

I will try some of the posts atropos has posted later today..

As for the IPX stuff I may have loaded wrong...

I installed it and lost the network all together as the auto assign of Ip address was screwed up bad and un able to get it correctted..
The tcp/ip is suppost to be assigned by DHCP,, but after installing the IPX protocal the TCP/IP settings had been changed and was unable to get into my own network here or the Internet...
I had to goto Recovery of the day before to correct.
I post again after trying this last suggestion.

Ok we have done some more upgrades..

We no longer have a win98se server it a new 1.7 win xp pro

and all the computer see each other very well but the browsing inside some programs is now on each machine.....

I have had a network person into our office to fix the problem that he said would take less then a hour....
We have since had to replace the server redue one of the workstations tried different routers and still he is now bafelled.... He saw before he started working that my machine was fast but not the others. But after he was done they are all back to square one...

He has told me to remove the netbeui from everything..

But he has not solved my problem either.

I was wondering if anybody has any information if i should try to add the IPX protocol to our network..

And if so what do i do with the bindings so tcp/ip still controls the Internet.

ok ill give the lastest great news

I have fixed my problems finnaly...

I added the IPX protocol to all computers
and i went into the tcp/ip advanced options and in the wins config. either disable it or set it to default.

Hey guys! Been Awhile! Dont pass thru here much anymore.

Heres some info to help you out Axcel if your still around for future reference.

After all you did and worked with I think this will shed some much needed light on the issue for you and many others!

Time learns more then MS or Classes care to ever teach one. So true..

Enjoy!
