Does the Microsoft XP Service Pack 1 disk have the complete operationg system so that a clean install can be done with it or do I have to upgrade from my old installation.

MIke

You'll need the original XP disk and then install SP1. I heard the XP disk will soon be available with SP1 already in it and will be marked as such.

The problem is that I tried adding it to my installation and it crashed my computer and I ended up having to reinstall everything anyway.

I was just wondering if I could go right to the new installation.

Maybe I'll wait until they incorporate it into the new Windows XP disk and start from scratch.

"I was just wondering if I could go right to the new installation.".

I think tha answer is no.

SP1 is a service pack, it is a bunch of updates to the core system to make it more stable. It doesn't have the reinstall feature but as linney suggested do the slipstreaming. Once you create a slipstream installation and put it on disc you can install SP1 from scratch, no need to install the original. You can install SP1 included. John D. Saucier

I would hazard a guess that the reason ti crashed your PC was that you are not using a completely 'legal' copy. In which case...SP1 won't like you PC and will defintately sort it out...so to speak!

Cheers

dosen't metter if you have a 'legal' copy of winXP
is there out a patch for SP1 so all the versions are legal :D

Reading this thread makes me realize what my old man was saying when he used to tell me "The devil has to work twice as hard".
LOL

I have a legal copy of XP the one that came on my new Dell 8200 computer, Duly registered.

I also have the sp1 disk directly from Microsoft.

I have tried to upgrade twice the first time by downloading the upgrade from the internet. When that crashed my computer to the point that I couldn't get any access to the hard drive at all I had to reinstall my operating system from the factory CD.

I then ordered the CD from Microsoft and POW my system crashed again though this time I could get in, in safe mode.

However I could not get it to reboot in normal mode even with my sound and video drivers disabled. After several hours of messing around I finally used the restore utility to go back to my old set up. I then got all these "Entry Point Not Found" errors. Even the System utility in Control Panel would not open.

I then ran reinstall over my old setup, but all the problems were still there.

Finally I reinstalled everything from scratch, including all my software.

That's why I would like to install the new version from scratch instead of trying to upgrade again.

Mike

SP1 will not even install on a pirated windows xp installation. Not unless you change the cd-key, and don't anyone ask I'm not giving out directions to do it. John D. Saucier
