Another hard drive not recognised question

Hello everyone,
This is about a Maxtor 541DX 20gig drive.It was in use as a data storage drive only with no o/s when it just stopped working.The drive is not recognised by the bios in any of the three machines I have tried it in therefor it can't be seen by any startup disk (fdisk or format)or any other utility (inc powermax.It was originally set as a slave but it dose not matter how you set the jumpers it just is not seen. One interesting thing is that if it is now hooked up as a slave to a master the machine will not boot at all so it would seem that it is also corupting the master drive.
Any ideas anyone?
