another BSoD problem ... 1

About a month ago, I picked up some spyware, several different kinds, some of my antispyware apps find them and delete them - they always pop right back in ...

found - running-
(spyware.generic) spysweeper5
(Trojan.Delf.nj) adaware
(and others) AVG anti spyware
spybot
Now, none of these programs will run to completion without bluescreening and forcing a manual shut off. I am also running Norton antivirus which will not scan to completion either.("Norton was unable to scan your computer for infections because a critical error occured during the scan")
Some of the bluescreen errors are:

I have tried System Restore, but that will not run, I get:
"The instruction at '0x5c0295fa' referenced memory at 0x00000000. The memory could not be 'read'.

So, all of my 'stand by' fixit apps are toast ...
Any tips welcome !!

More than one AV program installed will cripple most ANY system. Remove one or the other, although you might have to remove BOTH and reinstall one.

I've seen good systems die once AOL 9.0 gets installed.

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right-click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking. Select both boxes.

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

If they don't work you could try repairing windows by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.

I have been going back and forth between a windows issue and possibility of ram problems, so your tips hit right on the head as far as I was concerned ..
anyway, cannot run any of the scanners from safe mode without crashing ...
SFC ran a long time and closed itself, so I guess it was successful ?
Ran MEMTEST, and ended up with about 27,000,000 errors, it seems everything in RAM from about 391meg to 496meg reported errors ... I had to stop the test there, but will resume tonight and expect to replace it ... I currently have two 256meg sticks, so one must have died.

SFC leaves a report in the Event Viewer (System).
Event Type: Information
Event Source: Windows File Protection

I suppose it is possible to run on one 256 stick, or swap them around in the slots, etc., I'll leave you to play with that problem.

Of course, the next time I ran memtest, it made it through 8 full passes with out a single error ...

Had your RAM hardware configuration changed between tests, you don't say whether it had or whether the first test was faulty?

There is a more complicated, but also more reliable, RAM tester you can look at if you like? Have a look at the link to "Doc Memory" in this thread.

No - ram configuration had not changed before, during, or after any of these problems and checks ...

To differentiate between a hardware fault and an operating system error you could look at running something like BartPE just to see if that runs without crashing.

You might be able to make use of BartPE (a mini XP self contained on a bootable CD and run from CD) which includes virus scanners via plugins.
