I have a friend who received a harassing call from an anonymous caller on Skype. Is there anyway to get a log of an IP from an anonymous caller? He has contacted Skype and, since they are a German Co., he is required to file a claim with the German police before they will release any info. Is there any trail on his machine locally.

The dude who called had a thick accent and all we really want to do is make sure this is a guy from another country and not somebody living next door.

TIA

You should contact your local police for the procedure to follow in your country.

We are pursuing that angle but we get the impression that threatening skype calls are way down on the list of priorities for most law enforcement agencies. Is there anything that we can aquire locally on the machine that can bring some peace of mind?

Skype's call log should show the caller & his "id/name".

it has been awhile since i fooled with it but i thouhgt there was an option where you could block anyone from contacting you without your permission.

look at the setup and help files. somewhere within Skypes files there may be a record of the IP from the caller.

The most simple things which pop into my mind is to issue the command netstat -a on your local machine.
This produces a list of TCP/IP conections your machine is processing.
Redirect it to a file by using netstat -a > c:\netstat.txt
When the caller comes back, I suggest you set up a network trace. Two freeware tools are usefull for this, Ethereal and Packetyzer. Both use WinPCap to capture all network traffic to and from your machine. Packetyzer is Ethereal with a Windows GUI.
Set up a trace to cycle (ring buffer) the capture buffer. Be sure to trace in promiscuous mode. When the nasty Skype call is made, stop the network trace. You then have detailed information for further forensic analysis.
