Annoying chirps and clicks on idle systems

I've got two of my systems, one at W2k and one XP, connected to stereo systems.

I hate desktop sounds, so I've got the sound scheme set to "no sounds" on all of my systems.

Periodically some event is causing a click or chirp. I've got a fair assortment of multimedia programs lurking in memory - quicktime, kazaa, aim, as well as realvnc and McAfee anti-virus. But everything configurable that I can find is set to its most silent settings.

How would I go about tracing this ?

Well, why not narrow it down?

Only run one or two apps at a time for as long as it usually takes to hear the sound. Eventually, you should be able to pinpoint the culprit and go from there.

Are you sure it's coming from the speakers?

BCastner - overheating is something I'm worried about, as the stereo cabinet was toasty warm even before I slid the unit in on the top. I've drilled out some 1.25" holes on one side for venting and because the carpenter that built it didn't leave wire access holes, and the ones in the bottom are excessively full and tight. But I'm definitely worried about heat in there.

So what component chirps with overheating, and does anyone know where to find the utility for VIA Eden/.EPIA that will show the temperature and fan activity ?

tx,

Will

It is a pinging, cause that is what i get sometimes with Kazza running.

Definitely make sure it's not a heating problem first - which is why I asked if the sounds you were hearing were coming from the speakers or from inside the case.

Thanks for the help. Yes, I'm sure it's coming from the speakers, they're in a different room.

I grabbed to mobo monitor bcastner mentioned, and while working in my bedroom office over realvnc on the living room computer, bells started to go off; the alarm is set to 158%, and the temperature was reading 161. The Via Eden is supposedly hardened to run at higher temperatures, I guess I'll have to look up the top of the scale. Anyway, back to the pinging - would the pinging I heard have been the alarm, as driven by the settings in the bios ? I guess I'll have to shut down and check.

Over to teddysherri, the pinging you've gotten in Kazaa, do you know of a way to turn it off ? Because we run Kazaa on (I'm embarrased to give an exact count) many computers here.

Thanks again for the help. Stay tuned, this will undoubtedly lead to more questions,

Do you have any instant messaging software installed? sometimes when a 'buddy' logs on or off, you'll get a sound.

If anyone is still tracking this thread I can still use help here. Kazaa seems to be the culprit, but I've not been able to make it go away. I've tried all settings and checked the registry, it doesn't seem to have any settings for event sounds at all.

So instead, on another test pc, I've gone into the registry, found where two keys have values of "click.wav" and set that to null. I'm presuming that Kazaa is calling something that is a system event setting.

I also need to in general figure out how to shut up events on a pc; sometimes I wake up my wife with clicks when I forgot the sound card is connected through the bedroom stereo, and I'm just checking email before going to bed. One of the places I hate the clicks the most is in Internet Explorer, just opening a site often gives a loud click.

Am I on the right track here ?
