Analog Ports Unreliable 1

I've got a S8300 in a G700 with remote G350's in 2 locations, one connected via fiber and 1 via managed T1. In each location I set up an analog port using station type "modem" to give outbound connections to First Data credit card terminals.

For initial setup of the CC terminals we used POTS fax lines and they worked flawlessly. Once we switched them over to the PBX provided ports however, all 3 disconnect frequently during transactions. 1 or 2 retries will work, however the system is not as reliable as we need.

I had initially set them up as station type 2500, but after seeing the problems, I dug in and found I also "modem" and "fax" as choices. Switching to modem doesn't seem to have changed anything. The terminals are Nurit 8400's and the internal modems are already set all the way down to 1200 baud. 2 of the ports are on MM711 modules and 1 is on a MM714.

Any suggestions on how I might get more stable connections?

I can think of two things you can try. On the IP-codec-set for the PBX, make sure G-711 is an option, and then on the second page, make sure Modem is set relay.

Modem communications over IP is not that reliable, but many times can work. If relay does not work, you can always try pass-thru, but that may not help either.

I know there are others here who have much more experience with this that I have, but that is what I know of.

How many G700's/G350's per location? I've found in sites with multiple gateways that moving the analogue module into the same gateway as the DS1 helps. This reduces signal degradation.

I did find some info on ip-codecs after some deep digging. (I'm in over my head here, so bear with me ;-) )

I have 3 network regions. Let's call them "Main", "Gateways", "Remote".

Main Protocols: G.711MU, G.729A, G.729B. Modem mode = relay
Gateways Protocol: G.711MU Modem mode = relay
Remote Protocol: G.729A Modem mode = off

Main site: 3 G700's - The 1st one contains the S8300
Remote site 1 : G350 connected back to main site via fiber.
Remote site 2 : G350w/s8300LSP connected to main site via managed T1.

Terminal 1 is connected to a MM711 in Gateway 2 at the main site.
Terminal 2 is connected to a MM711 at Remote Site 1.
Terminal 3 is connected to a MM714 at Remote Site 2.

It seems that Terminal 3 would have to be using region Remote but how do i determine which region the other two are using?

It sounds like I would want to add G.711 to the Remote region and set the modem mode to pass-through on all 3. The Redundancy is 0 in all 3 cases - would changing that help at all?

makes this mention: "Therefore, assign modem endpoints to a network region that uses a modem-enabled IP Codec set, and assign the Super G3 fax machines to a network region that uses a fax-enabled IP Codec set."

I would love to isolate modems from other traffic, but I wouldn't begin to know how to do that, especially with our distributed system.

do you have a T1 or PRI in the remote G350s? You have not answered that question. If you do, set the MM710 DS1 card to be your "synchronization source" for each gateway.

"set sync interface primary v4"(if your MM710 T1/PRI is in Slot V4)

"set sync source primary" (sets the sync source to the primary interface defined above)

then "show sync source" (will show you if the G350 is synching of this source now)

This helps a LOT with MM711/MM714 analog stations (be they modems, FAX machines, etc), to sync to the DID arriving on that PRI. If you're DID's are arriving via the G700's from the main site, this might not help much, but it's still good to have a local synchronization source, if you have a T1/PRI in the remote gateways.

You also did not say what version of Communication manager you have, but it sounds like you have CM5.0

On the IP-codec set, page 2, make sure that the "FAX" and "Modem" modes are DIFFERENT, they cannot both be pass-through, or both be relay. Try setting the FAX to "t.38-standard" and Modem to "pass-through". Do this on all of the IP codec sets used (found on the IP Network Region form), usually its 1 region per location.

We are running CM version 3.1. The extensions in question are not DID since they only need to call out.

(To the best of my knowledge) The main site has our T1 to the outside phone world. Remote site 1 connects to the main site via ethernet over fiber. Remote site 2 has a T1 back to the main site.

I'll need to run things by some other people before actually modifying anything and I'll be out for part of next week, but I'm getting some excellent information here.

Finally got a chance to make some of the changes to the modem and fax modes, protocols, etc. Unfortunately, I don't really have any good troubleshooting method other than asking the credit card terminal users to see if the error decrease.

Got a chance to do a little testing and got a fax from one analog port to another to work on pass-through but not t.38.

Why do the fax and modem modes need to be different? Is is a bandwidth issue or is there some other conflict involved?
