Hi
I have been trying to repair amd am2 x2 6.0 cpu it has 2 brocken corner pins the previous owner damaged the cpu whilst removing hsf.
My progress thus far has been to remove the pin stumps and the small donut shape base and now I have 2 bright spots to solder to, in the centre of the bright spots I have made two very small indentations using a needle these are to keep the pins centered while soldering.
My problem is I have managed to solder a pin on in the correct position but when I remove the small brace that I've been using to hold the pin in place the new pin comes away with it leaving the solder on the base of the pin only and not taking to the solder pad on the cpu the original pin and base were gold plated but I am using pins made from capacistor legs and soldering with 60%tin rozen filled solder
So if I could please have some advice on what solder and flux I should be using or any input positive or negative would be much appreciated

seems alot of hassle just for a cpu. wouldnt it be easier to just buy a new 1 as after you've done all that its not garenteed to work and all your hard work be in vain..

if I remember right in my classes I took ...the CPU pins are on a die and are not soldered in ...They are pressed as a unit ...heat from the soldering iron may be too much heat and will burn out the connection path...this path is thinner then 1/32 of the thickness of hair.

HalComps is right buy a new one

My guess is the CPU is already toast in more ways than one. In all my reading and studies I've never heard of repairing a CPU, except for using a mechanical pencil to straighten a bent pin. The tolerances are incredibly tight, but I have to give you a salute for trying! [thumbsup]

You might actually damage a perfectly good mainboard by installing a shorted CPU.

Hi Thanks for the input guys
Firstly I don't need this cpu I just perchased it to see if I could repair it could well turn into a $50.00 key ring. Have only found two references from countless google searchs where cpus appear to have been successfully repaired by soldering in the link below the pins seem to have been soldered with tin or silver based solder

firewolfrl think you could right there can see two very thin copper layers when I look at the pcb edge

This is what you need to repair the Cpu. I used this on an AMD FX-60. Nothing else will work.

And a High Magnify Glass with base and a light.

You will also have to find the right gauge wire to
make a pin out of. The old one will be to short. Cut the
new one to size after soldering. Try a jewerly repair shop.
You will have to find a steady hand! This must be done quickly not to do more damage to other pins and Cpu.

Thanks blizz26 will give the flux a try
