When in town yesterday I noticed a new cafe has opened up. Looks nice enough from a quick glance, but it's called "Gallary Cafe" - I can't go in there! I just can't!

@ncotton

Thanks! I always knew them as SegaGenesis and SegaCD.

Maybe dude's name is Gallar...

Who knows? There used to be this place near Eudora, Mississippi called Chez Bubba, they served fancy catfish. haha

Why do small businesses come up with stupid names?

anotherhiggins - oops! Indeed, I take comfort in the number of people who didn't spot it though! (You could all claim to have been being polite, but I'm not sure I'd believe you!)

As to the cafe being owned by Mr/Ms Gallary, surely that would be Gallary's Cafe?

Oh, and another one that annoys me, this time on presentation rather than grammar is (name changed to protect the guilty) "JOE BLOGGS". The double space somehow just really offends me! However it does look highly probable that he did the signs himself, so in this case it wouldn't put me off using him as I don't require high levels of literacy in a builder.

Hmmm, for a generally laid-back person I do sometimes get annoyed easily!

The other thing that nobody has mentioned is that misspelt names are sometimes deliberately adopted so that they can be trademarked more easily. If you try to trademark something which is correctly spelt, you are more likely to come into conflict with existing businesses who have already snaffled that name.

One that annoyed me recently was "French" restaurant I saw in North London called "Le Maison Blanc". I'm distinctly unconvinced by people whose knowledge of French doesn't extend to getting the right gender for "maison" - it should be "La Maison Blanche". But of course they may have done it for trademark reasons or to encourage French language pedants to come in and order a meal just so they can complain to the waiter.

See, now I'm the type who would walk in there and say "So... did you purposely mis-spell gallery?"

For years I sneered at such ignorance until it was pointed out to me that I still remember it, thirty years later. It had the same effect as the 'Shake-n-Vac' add (sorry, non Brits, try 'Crazy Eddie' if you're from NY) where it was so bad it was totally memorable, and hence good advertising.

Mr Healy! You've used 'add' as an abbreviation for 'advertising' in a thread about illiteracy. Shame on you. [smarty]
