I use a remote workstation using pcanywhere connected by high-speed cable modem on a VPN. The new satellite internet services say they don't work for VPN. Is there an alternative to VPN? I want to set up a remote via two-way satellite internet.

Sure there is.

Good prices on remote internet and voice!!!

You may also want to take a look at Skycasters. Actually, I just got off the phone with one of their sales reps regarding their SuperVPN solution using the Hughes DirecWay satellite internet system.

I currently have the DirecWay system for personal home use and it DOES NOT (for various reasons) support the Nortel Extranet Access Client my company uses. Hughes does have the DirecWay Business Edition as well, though I have not really looked into it.

Skycasters is pretty expensive, but it sounds nice. The problem is with the long latency on a satellite connection. We have a satellite, and sometimes pings take two seconds to come back.

A couple of problems using VPN over satellite, including SkyCasters. With the exception of a few vendors, like Future Visions ( the upload speed is not enough to sustain a VPN connection and enable multiple users to access the Web and email. Most DirecWay business versions are not much faster than a 28.8 modem and can cost up to $600 per month for a small business.

Actually remote access programs like NetOp and Netsupport offer reasonable speeds, but require a PC on the other end. PC Anywhere and Remote Administrator can't handle the latency.

Your best bet with a satellite is to see if you can get the client to run via UDP, so that the latency induced by waiting for validation packets that secure handshakes occurred is removed. This will make it run faster than ISDN for these types of applications.

How would you go about using udp for the Client. Just had a dw6000 two-way installed. Cant get any vpn working on it. Is there any thing other then going and spending $2500 to $3000 on skycasters or supervpn..... Any Help would be appreciated.
