I've set up an encoding PC within a medium sized company with around 100 PC's in their network and 3-4 IT personnel. My aim is to unicast the stream of live video from the encoding machine inside their network to a single PC on the internet.

As I've done on my own PC, I've told them that the only way the stream can be accessed is to forward a port outside their router so that it can be accessed. They say that rather than do that, they can give me access to their network with our without a VPN (preferably without VPN).

They've spent days trying to do this without success (without a VPN). The stream can be viewed inside their network but not outside it.

My question is, is there an alternative to forwarding a port by somehow allowing me access by IP address or must they forward & is it difficult on a large network?

I'd love to be able to tell you Burt, but I don't know and don't want to ask as I'm not the IT expert and don't want to be telling a granny how to suck eggs

But I am interested generally in knowing if its a problem

Stephen

There is no way you are going to get the video external to their network without the assistance of the IT staff that control the firewall/router.

No, I'm sorry if I'm confusing the issue here. I've provided and configured a PC and camera to this company and set it up to stream live video from their workshop. Thats my bit done. Their bit is to connect it to their network and stream it (restricted) over the internet so that I can log onto the stream miles away

Gotcha ... well your choice is to either VPN to their network and view it locally. Or they open the necessary ports in their edge gear. For security reasons, your best bet is the vpn.

Thanks brianinms, can you tell me if its difficult to open the necessary ports and do they have to be forwarded? Is this a difficult operation?

It is not difficult, but as to how it can be done depends on the particular edge router.

Burt

Ok, but do they have to be forwarded to have them open please?

Yes, they will have to map a public ip address to the private ip address and open the necessary ports.

Thats exactly the information I was looking for. Thanks all
