alternative to paragraphformat( )?

I'm trying to output data from a cftextarea input box, and I want to format it just as the user entered it. But the only way I can find to do that is with paragraphformat(variable), and this turns one return into a space, and two returns into a <p>. Is there another way around this? I want one return to equal one return.

Help anyone?

This is probably bit more than you want - but it converts whatever they entered into html and vice versa if need be:
