Alternative hardware for 3700 / Simphony

Management's asking us to look into alternative workstations for our 3700 stores. We're also looking into upgrading to Simphony 2x in a couple years. Our team is familiar with installing Win32 CAL and OPOS configuration, but we don't have any real world experience with alternative hardware. Could anyone who's gone down this path offer any advice on specific hardware? (ie avoid this workstation, or we're doing fine with that workstation.)
