I am attempting to do an alternate client restore using of an Oracle
database using Netbackup 3.2. I am unable to do the restore using a
different media server (tape drives direct SCSI attached to the new
client) than the one used for the original backup but am able to
restore to the new client using the original media server. I'm not
getting any errors. Netbackup is finding the images and the correct
media but will not mount the media. I have verified that the storage
unit is working and communicating with both clients by performing hot
backups of both clients using the New Storage Unit. Any Ideas??
Thanks

Netbackup, by default, does not allow you to restore backups from servers other than the one used to write the backup. There are 3 methods you can use to override this default and perform server independent restores (as they are called. I will give you one scenario that may fit your requirement.

If the Server that Originally Wrote the Media is Available

1. If necessary, physically move the media. Then, update the Media Manager volume database by using move volume options in the Media Manager administration utilities (ie. in the GUI, click on Media and Device Management then click on the tape that you want to move and right click on it. You can then select Move… and change the device etc.)

2. Update the Netbackup image catalog on the master server and the Media server. The server where the tape was and the server it is going to (ie. in the GUI, click on Media and Device Management then click on menu option Actions and then Inventory Robot…You should then run the inventory update for both of the devices).

Then use the following commands, which can be run from either of the Netbackup servers:

cd /usr/openv/netbackup/bin/admincmd
./bpmedia –movedb –ev ‘media_id’ –newserver hostname –oldserver hostname
