Alpine 3808 & SMM 54014 limited mode

I have to do basic tests for the Alpine 3808's, 04's & 02's that come into our warehouse. Backplane testing, then basic diag on the cards.
I've been having problems with this last batch.
First off, the SMM (or the chassis) goes into "limited mode"
1. can I/how do I escape it?
2. Is it a problem with the SMM or the chassis?

3. Some have come up with critical error, invalid mac address. Can I change MAC address? How?


There is more, but this is a start.
Also, I've tried to peruse the Alpine PDF files, but there is sooo much info it is overwhelming.
I'm pretty fair at finding things myself, but I am up against a wall on this.
Send me links where I can find the info (if there are any)

try this
at the admin prompt

clear log diag-status
clear log messages nvram
unconfigure switch all

reboot the switch

next

run diag ext slot backplane

see what happens when the diags complete
